Interview With Christoph Woloszyn From Germany

Interview With The 2021 New York Photography Awards Winner – Christoph Woloszyn

1Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?

My name is Christoph Woloszyn. I am a qualified photo designer.

I've been involved in art and photography for around 20 years.

First I did realistic oil painting, then I really wanted to try photography, explore other possibilities.

2Where did you study photography?
In 2010, I studied "photo design" at the art academy IBKK in Bochum (Germany) with a degree in photo design.
3Do you remember your first shot? What was it?
I took my first photo on the beach in Sopot (Poland). Seascape in black and white, photographed analog and exposed on photo paper.
4What equipment do you use?
For my photography I use Nikon D810 with lenses: wide angle, portrait and macro. For my studio photography I use studio flashes from Multiblitz.
5What do you hope to achieve?
Through my photography I want to expand and deepen my own perspective on art photography. I want to explore many avenues of art photography and show new perspectives.
6What compliment inspired/touched you the most?

For me, the most beautiful thing is when I hear that the viewer has never seen anything like this before.

Or how did you do it?

7What inspires your unique storytelling?

I am inspired by the images of the surreal world.

The surreal works of art that tell us a lot. The viewer can embark on a journey of thought, he just has to allow that. I am inspired by images with hidden messages that move us to go on a surreal journey.

8What THREE (3) words describe your photography style?
Surreal, new and unique.
9Congratulations! As the winner of the New York Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?
The award means a lot to me. Indescribable feeling that my photo art is seen and recognized.
10Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 New York Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

I wanted to present a surreal work for the photo competition because I really like the surreal and unknown. "Light Towers" is a surreal composition of two light towers and the church, surreal, threatening and mysterious.

A human, small and vulnerable, wanders between threatening clouds and of hostile nature. The picture tells us a lot. It's not just a picture, there are hidden messages for the viewer. If you look at it for a long time, the composition will tell us a lot more than you might think at the beginning.

11How has winning an award developed your career?
As a result of winning the photo competition, I get a lot of emails about the exhibition of my work.
12Name 1-3 photographers who have inspired you.
I was inspired by many photographers, most of them: Philippe Halsman, Man Ray, Brassai.
13What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?
I was told earlier: "Find your own way of art photography. Don't copy someone else, use your own thoughts and everything else will come by itself. Have patience."
14What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?
Patience and a lot of interest in exploring the unknown.
15What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
The key to success is work and focused work again. Even if you don't succeed in the beginning, the reward will come at some point.
16Anything else you would like to add to the interview?
I would like to thank the judges of the New York Photography Awards, that my work was seen and recognized.
