1 Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your creative background.

My name is Chih-Yuan Chang, an interdisciplinary designer who recently graduated with a Master’s degree in Communication Design at Pratt Institute and is currently based in Brooklyn.

I have been pursuing my career as a visual communicator and a storytelling graphic designer who visualizes thought-provoking ideas through playful graphics and images. I love to explore extensive tools and experience with various materials to approach my design on my path of creating. I have been recognized by numerous awards worldwide and featured in the different press.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a creative?

Creativity is a unique and intriguing sense that I have been exploring and achieving since I was a child. I love the creative process of modeling and researching innovative approaches when I become a professional in this creative industry. The satisfaction of developing a project comes with a surprise, even though the process could be strenuous.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I am currently entitled to a creative agency called ABD co. as a graphic designer. It is a creative agency specializing in visual identity and brand strategy. My job role is to develop and execute branding projects with tailored, meaningful, and purpose-driven creativity.

4What does “creativity” mean to you?

Creativity to me as a graphic designer is a creative method to approach meaningful impact through observation and carefully considered creative strategy and visualize bold ideas with beautiful identities, expressive recognitions, and holistic experiences. Sometimes, you can’t expect them to cross your mind.

5To you, what makes a “creative” idea and/or design?

Always pay attention to the details around you no matter if it's something tangible or news that is happening somewhere else on earth. These details could inspire you when you are working on a project.

Besides the “creative” idea, I believe the definition of a “good” design is more critical. Fluent user experience and clear information delivered in a creative approach make a “good” design. Also, the “good” design outcomes will demonstrate comfortable experiences to the customers and draw positive influences to the brand.

6Tell us about your creative and/or design process.

Listen. Learn to listen and understand the clients’ needs is the first and most important process. I will make notes and ask for detailed information about their brand story, expectations, and everything related to the client, such as their habits or favorite music. In the meantime, we will discuss the project’s timeline, which is a critical step to schedule deadlines and manage the delivery execution.

I provide all the drafts along with the references to them in the next meeting. I also offer my thoughts and solutions on the next step of amending the first draft. Then we keep communicating and refining the design assets back and forth for the best design practice.

7Describe your creative style and its main characteristics.

Thought-provoking, innovative, and experimental styles are the most recognizable characteristics reflect in my design work. I strive to communicate ideas through visualized graphics and extensive techniques that blend these styles of mine into the creative process.

8Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Creative Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

As a winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards means a lot to me. It is an absolute satisfaction and courage to reach this accomplishment from such a representative international design competition like yours. This recognition from you highlights the efforts I have put in on my submitted works and motivates me to work harder for future projects.

9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Creative Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

Vintner is founded by two designers who are fond of vintage clothes. The brand elevates thrifting and vintage shopping to a fashionable lifestyle and promotes quality second-hand goods. Inspired by the style of the founders, the brand personality is edgy and refreshing. The goal is to remind people of the quality of unworn clothes and the exquisite old-fashion style that delivers the Treasure of Time as the brand’s core value.

10What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge was the decision on the brand style. We explored and developed a wide range of different identities for the brand. We have difficulties deciding because some are pretty exceptional and stylish, which perfectly represented the brand's personality.

11How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Again, Muse Creative Award is one of the most competitive and repetitive international design awards. It is a great honor to receive the award, and it also gives me more motivation to create more extraordinary work. Besides, sharing my successful work with the world reach my fulfillment.

12What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Collaborate and make creative contributions to society.

Reach clients’ satisfaction of flourishing and make me flourish at the same time.

Enhance the city’s looking and public's aesthetic sense by putting innovation into advertising, media, publishing, packaging, etc.

13What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?

The United States is enormous and contains a wide variety of sources and talented creatives. Many people with diverse cultural backgrounds worldwide exchange their thoughts and perspectives here and create unexpected consequences. It is somewhat fascinating to see the design industry thriving and expanding at a fast pace every day.

14 Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I believe that design will be more virtual due to the improvement of visualization apps and communication tools. After the outbreak of the pandemic, we learn how essential and convenient the technologies are. Also, the social media platforms will turn into a more significant business and more refined since more and more people are using social media to showcase their work and business promotion.

15If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Creative Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

Don’t hesitate and go for it. Believe in yourself to present your best works and share your ideas with creatives all around the world.

16What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the creative industry?

Social media and design platforms. Like I mentioned above, social media are excellent platforms for designers to demonstrate their works. Also, there are some accounts with thousands of followers that welcome designers to submit and promote the projects for FREE. You can find more outstanding projects that will inspire you and improve your skills.

17Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

There are some interesting projects going on on my side and I can’t wait to publish them. Stay tuned.

18Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My parents for sure. I am so grateful that my parents encouraged me to jump out of the comfort zone and discover something I am not familiar with. I am pretty scared when I start my new life by myself on the other side of the earth. Now I am appreciative that I had my parents' support to broaden my horizons and experience different cultures.

19What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Stay hungry and stay foolish. Do the research and ask questions if I do not comprehend with the doubts, and always make a question of WHY to stimulate the train of thoughts. Also, always show respect and be kind to people around you. You never know if you might desperately need their help.
