Interview with the 2022 Vega Digital Awards Winner -
Chiang Cheng-Han

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I was fascinated by drawings since I was a child and majored in art at junior high and senior high school. However, I gradually found out that such set art form wasn’t my passion. I began to learn illustrations and majored in visual communication design in university then fell in love the process of making stories alive.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a digital designer/artist?

I enjoyed using drawing to express my feelings since I was a child, and found out that others would be moved by this. In this way, I, who am not good at words, can tell the story through the picture. Then it slowly developed into motion graphics.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

JP SPACE Studio was founded in 2017. We dedicated to bring experts in different fields to join our fleet and prosperity of Taiwan image circles. We also teach at colleges and universities, cooperating with young designers in the industry, sharing and supporting, and create a better and more diverse environment.

4What’s your favorite kind of digital design and why?

If there needs to be an answer, I would say animated movie. Like Kon Satoshi or Miyazaki Hayao, I am deeply moved by how they tell a story. They have given me a lot of inspirations and thoughts, no matter it’s narrative of dreams, virtual or for my creativity.

5To you, what makes a “good” design?

Amplify the tiniest thing to complete the whole project.

6Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Basically, there’s no set form or any limitations for me to design. I am willing to try to create on my own as long as it’s proposed by the clients.

7Tell us about your design process.

Understand what client needs at first and choose a medium form what fits the best. Then, tell a charming story. After establishing the main fracture, make story board, style frame, film, motion design, BGM and VO fit the title well.

8Where do you draw inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from people or things around me. Observe and grab any little moment and don’t let go. Everything around you could give you some inspiration.

9What current trends in digital design (or really anything digital related) are you most excited about?

I wish that people could control and use UI without using or wearing any equipments in the future. And our daily lives could be connected with virtual environment smoothly with ease. In this way, people could create more image possibility under this environment.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2022 Vega Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

I’m really thankful to be given all these awards. They’re precious to me and my team, and we believe it’s just a beginning.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2022 Vega Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The two charismatic brand character starred in our video. Through the metaphor on the TV screen, the two feels and understands the financial difficulties of students. However, the magic coin slot twist makes the characters get into the carefree and jolly world, which implies our platform solves all the financial issues student generation got. In the end, the real world changes as well.

When I think it’s time to make a try.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

For we must built a whole new but funny, interesting worldview, we put a lot of efforts on designing story board, style frames, concepts, motion design and BGM.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

To us, winning this award helps us to to gain more courage to face challenges and to create better works. We have also gained the trust of more clients so that we could work together for better results.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about the digital industry?

Creation, transmission and emotion.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the digital industry?

I live in Taiwan, and my hometown is Taitung. The historical environment has made us perseverant and indomitable. Through complete democratic freedom, we can say whatever we want and show our own story. This is the greatest thing in Taiwan.

16Where do you see the evolution of digital industry going over the next 5-10 years?

People are now paying more attention to visual charm and pursuing for short-length film instead of the main idea and the story itself. What really caught people’s eyes are those value the both. I believe in the future that people will value the essence of content rather than showing off skills.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring Vega Award submitter, what advice would you give them?

Have your own daily routine, have a regular life but keep extra time for sudden changes. Feel and observe every moment of life, and make analyzing a habit. Don’t start your work from first coming up visual appearances but change the story into words when work with clients.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the digital industry?

I use Keynote most of the time. A good work must be built on accurate, good planning and nice communication with customers or the team. I often summarize my idea through words. In this way, I’m able to change my imagination then visualize them into words and complete scripts with the team.

19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I used to be a naughty kid. I once had a fight with my brother using umbrellas, like two knights having a battle. Unluckily, I didn’t win the battle because my brother stabbed the umbrella into my eyes. But don’t worry, my eyes are now great and no big problems except I am near-sighted.

20Who has inspired you in your life and why?

If there needs to be an answer, I would say animated movie. Like Kon Satoshi or Miyazaki Hayao, I am deeply moved by how they tell a story. They have given me a lot of inspirations and thoughts, no matter it’s narrative of dreams, virtual or for my creativity.

21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

To observe and to analyze. Observe tiny things and feel the feelings then analyze them and convert them into your own thoughts.
