Interview With The 2023 MUSE Photography Awards Winner – Aitor del Arco

1Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?

Hi there! My name is Aitor del Arco and I'm a visual artist with a passion for all forms of art. Since I was a child, I've been fascinated by art and have explored various disciplines. However, it wasn't until I started my studies in 3D design and animation that I discovered my true passion for photography.

It was then that I bought my first second-hand DSLR camera which has been with me on my journey for several years. Now, as a visual artist, I use my experience and skills to create unique pieces that convey emotions and tell stories. I'm excited to keep exploring the world of art and sharing my work with others!

2Where did you study photography?

I studied photography at a general level in Valencia while pursuing my studies in 3D design and animation which allowed me to explore different techniques and styles. Later, I continued my education in Burgos and Lisbon where I focused my studies on the field of visual communication.

Through my academic training and daily practice, I have acquired skills and knowledge that I apply in my work as a visual artist. Photography is a fundamental part of my life and I am excited to continue exploring and creating with this incredible tool.

3Do you remember your first shot? What was it?

I remember the first time I held a camera in my hands. It was during a family visit to a safari, and the camera was an analog one. From the moment I started taking pictures, I knew I had found my passion. In the first 30 minutes, I used up the whole roll of film taking pictures of different animals.

However, my photographic adventure was cut short when we arrived at the elephant area. One of them stole a woman's bag and ate it, and I remember the frustration I felt when I realized I couldn't capture that moment because I had run out of film. But that day I learned something important: that photography is not just about capturing images, but also moments and emotions. Since then, I have continued exploring and refining my art, and I am excited to keep doing so in the future.

4What equipment do you use?
I currently use a Sony A7 mark IV with a 24-70mm 2.8f lens. It is a bit heavy but it allows me to have great versatility.
5What compliment inspired/touched you the most?
When people tell me that they have seen a part of their life or an emotion or feeling reflected in one of my works.
6What inspires your unique storytelling?

It's hard to pinpoint a single thing that inspires me because inspiration comes from many different places, and most importantly, it's influenced by how you're feeling in the moment. However, I've noticed that some of my most inspiring moments have come from the saddest ones. Maybe it's because those are the moments when you feel the most deeply and authentically.

But what I've learned is that inspiration can come from anywhere if you're open to it. That's why I'm always seeking out new experiences, people, and perspectives that can spark my creativity and keep me inspired.

7What THREE (3) words describe your photography style?
I would say ethereal, whimsical and existentialism.
8Congratulations! As the winner of the MUSE Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?
Thank you so much! Winning the MUSE Photography Awards is an incredible honor and a true validation of the hard work and dedication that I have put into my craft. This recognition not only means the world to me but also motivates me to continue pushing boundaries and exploring new creative territories. I'm truly grateful for this amazing opportunity to showcase my vision and share it with the world.
9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 MUSE Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
Ad Caelestis, is an open series that explores the wonders of our celestial vault. Each image blends together celestial bodies with the cultural significance they've accumulated over time. Whether it's a modern interpretation or a centuries-old tradition, each depiction offers a unique glimpse into humanity's deep fascination with the cosmos. Is the intersection of science, culture, and art.
10How has winning an award developed your career?
Winning an award always helps to certify that your work is validated by a group of experts, so it acquires a certain relevance.
11Name 1-3 photographers who have inspired you.
Cho Ghiseok, Alex Stoddard and Kyle Thompson.
12What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?
Keep creating, even if you don't feel like it.
13What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?
Keep creating, even if you don't feel like it.
14What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Grab a camera and start taking pictures. Practice makes a master.
15How do you stay in that space of being receptive to new information and knowledge?
I have always had this need to learn new things. I think a big part of being successful in any artistic career is always being open and continuing to educate yourself. We all continue to learn until the end of our days.
