Interview with the 2019 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Vishal Vora

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I have done fine art from of  I.S College of Fine Arts, India with over 18 years of Multi Disciplinary and multi sector experience in design direction, management and implementation in India. I have worked overseas for various market like Europe, America and GCC. I have a keen eye for quality design and a profound experience in applying graphic principles to produce innovative design for any media. My Inclination lies towards branding, packaging design, product design and exhibition design for perfume and cosmetic industries.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

My inclination towards design comes naturally, Each one of us born with some natural flair for me the art is one of them, I used to draw mythological characters, Indian Gods and Goddesses since childhood and all these characters symbolize something, because we all live by stories since childhood we grown up listening stories. We love stories naturally, and as art and design is a medium to express our emotions, it can be any form of art, be it design, dance , music, literature or performing art. I still remember when I was a kid I used to collect empty matchboxes because of some nice printed graphics on it, I don’t know whether I was aware at that time that this kind of work is done by some expert people. I had a huge collection of match boxes at that time, and as time went by, one of my school teacher told me that you should pursue in field of art. After that, I started preparing for formal design education and I did my Applied art from I.S. College of Fine Arts.

4What does “design” mean to you?

For me design is a medium of telling a story, the very purpose of design is to tell story whether it be packaging, product, art or any form of design some way or other, where it tells a story; if it does not do so, it is dead.
Design is a form that functions.
Design is a form that awakens your senses.
Design is a form that has dialogue.
Design is a form that triggers an emotion.
Design is form that lifts your mood.
Design is form that makes you ponder.
Design is form that inspires you.
Design is a form of crafting poetry.
Design makes this world more livable,
Design is not a static thing; it is constantly moving and ever evolving.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

It is very difficult answer this because we have designed more than 150 products and packaging. The best part of any design project is the very process from the genesis of idea to the realization of product. if I have to name few of our projects that we are proud of, they are Tool Box, Bonita, Swano, Espada, and many more.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

For me Good Design is a fusion of Art, Idea and Execution.

When I say ART, I mean aesthetic and visual presence of design. Any design, art or design is consumed by our eyes first. That’s why I believe understanding the science of eye candy is very crucial in any design process,

IDEA stands for addressing the problem, be it a functional, emotional, environmental or user-centric. Meeting the objective of solving problem as per requirement is very important as well.

EXECUTION makes or breaks the design. There is a term in design called “lost in translation”, when an ART and IDEA works but the end product has not come out the way it was planned and the visualization during the entire exercise becomes useless, So all these 3 elements have to be in tune with each other to get the desired result; that’s how they collectively make good design for me.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

As a designer, I strongly believe your design needs to have to have a hook and have strong character that hold the attention and triggers the emotion of viewer or consumer.

8Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Yes, India has a most diversified cultural heritage in the world. It's a nation within the cluster of nations with cultural diversity which are united by one core essence. As a designer, I feel it has broadened my horizon and make me see the world with a new perspective.
