Trisha Palmer

Trisha Palmer is the Technical Director of IKM Visual Solutions. Her title may sound unique in the creative services industry, however, the company's business is a bit unique in that they specialize in technical industries like Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals, Construction, and Marine Terminals. She got her start working for a large Oil & Gas manufacturer writing communications on a project that was several hundred million pounds. It was expensive, complex and had numerous stakeholders. Translating information from a technical team in operations to non-technical people in finance or PR became part of her everyday life. But simply translating information into text wasn’t enough so she taught herself how to use 3D modeling and animation software to help create training and marketing messages in a visual medium.

Interview with the 2018 Muse Creative Awards Winner - Trisha Palmer

1First, tell us about yourself, your company, job profile, etc.
My name is Trish Palmer and I’m the Technical Director of IKM Visual Solutions. My title is probably unique in a creative services industry, however, our business is a bit unique in that we specialize in technical industries like Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals, Construction, and Marine Terminals. I got my start working for a large Oil & Gas manufacturer writing communications on a project that was several hundred million pounds. It was expensive, complex and had numerous stakeholders. Translating information from a technical team in operations to non-technical people in finance or PR became part of my everyday life. But simply translating information into text wasn’t enough so I taught myself how to use 3D modeling and animation software to help create training and marketing messages in a visual medium.
2Tell us a bit about your business and what you do.
IKM Visual Solutions are a small team of creatives with a powerful skill set. We combine animation, film, e-learning, and VR to provide our clients with a wide variety of multimedia formats to choose from. The technical creativity we put into our projects provides our customers with an opportunity to see real value-added solutions. Our work is often used by multiple teams for multiple uses – and this helps to create long-standing relationships.
3Congratulations! As the winner of the 2018 Muse Creative Awards, what does winning this award mean to you and your team?
My team and I spend our days working with a wide range of client teams to explain technical concepts, be it for training, communications or marketing & business development. Our designers often work on projects for months at a time and really develop a sense of pride in the work they’re producing – in part due to the relationships that are formed from working with clients over long periods. To have a recognition of the effort that is put into our work has delighted our team, especially because we don’t work in sectors that would usually win awards.
4Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I believe that creative industries are going to become a mainstream component for SME’s and Large Enterprise businesses. Visual mediums are fast becoming a standard part of how we communicate – most newsfeeds are packed with animations, video or interactive experiences. I think what was a ‘nice to have’ element of business historically has become a ‘must have’ as part of producing engaging media & training programmes.
5What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
1. Collaborating on projects that change the way people think.

2. The complexity of software that is available makes it possible for people to work in different ways and achieve the same results.

3. Visual communication has narrowed borders and it’s easier than it’s ever been to reach global audiences.
6If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in creative industry, what would it be?
To surround yourself with equally passionate people and learn as much as you can from them.

IKM Visual Solutions

IKM Visual Solutions was established in 2006. We’re a team of ‘technical creatives’, and that means that while we produce a wide range of media formats we specialize in scripting writing and content for technical markets like Engineering, Petrochemicals, Construction, Marine Terminals etc.
Historically, animation & film, interactive learning and immersive formats like VR weren’t always at the forefront of business operations. Over the past 5-7 years, however, it’s become a critical component of training, communication, and marketing.
