Blake is the Chief Product Officer of Mercku, where his management experiences allows him to actively engage in industrial, UI and UX design to its fullest potential.
I’m the Chief Product Officer of Mercku with over 10 years of design and management experience, actively engaging in industrial, UI and UX design. My design philosophy is based on the trinity of functionality, visual appeal and easy-of-use. I’ve won the Red Dot “Best of the Best” Award in 2013 and the Red Dot Award in 2019.
The artist needs to invest a lot of emotion and attention when it comes to design to explain the abstraction and to create deep emotional connections into the work. As an artist, these are the fundamental difference between humans and other animals. When I am designing, I can feel the uniqueness of being a human.
Founded in Canada's Waterloo technology hub in 2017, Mercku's vision is to make powerful and easy-to-use smart home technology accessible to people around the world. Just as a house needs to be built on a strong foundation, the modern functionality of an automated smart home needs to be supported by a powerful and reliable wireless network. Mercku is built on the foundation of our founders' decades of expertise (and over 400 patents) in network technology, allowing us to be innovation-leaders across the industry. My work is to lead the product and design team for Industrial, packaging UI and UX design to provide an excellent product.
My design philosophy is: Innovation to improve daily life
My favorite designers include Naoto Fukasawa, whose work is marked by subtle observation of daily life and an Eastern sense of control. The other one is Philippe Starck, who is extremely bold at deconstruction, in pursuit of the real boundaries of design.
A good design is something in which you can feel the warmth of life, ease of use, emotionally resonant.
Minimalism that can enhance daily life. Minimalism means decreasing unnecessary informational noise to provide a more direct functional use. When that inspiration is coming from daily life, it brings the distance between the product and users closer to each other providing a sense of safety and familiarity.
The Mercku Haven is a rethinking of what the modern smart home can be, stripping the concept down to its most basic elements in order to provide the best version of fundamental functions like connectivity, security and positioning. This system is also the first of its kind to provide the smart home with a sense of space and location which particularly appeals to me as a designer.
Created by Hall-of-Fame engineers with over 400 patents, Mercku Haven is the most advanced smart home system in the world.
