Interview with the 2018 Muse Creative Awards Winner - Ronda Scholting

1First, tell us about yourself, your company, job profile, etc.
I am the Public Information Officer. I’m responsible for disseminating information to the media and to the residents and business owners in our fire district. I use social media to inform and engage, producing at least one longer form video each week, which I share on Facebook and Youtube. I often do a version for Instagram. Before coming to West Metro, I worked in the corporate world as a public relations manager, and before that, worked as a television news reporter, producer, and anchor for more than 20 years.
2Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
It’s so hard to guess. When I started in the TV news industry, I shot film for six months at my first station. Then we got video cameras. It’s sometimes hard to wrap your head around the fact that you can shoot and edit videos on your phone, then upload to social media, the internet. As a reporter, I did live shots, courtesy of a live van. Now, I can do them on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, etc. I am sure the means by which we gather and disseminate video will change with technology, but, the power of a well shot and produced piece will still have the ability to engage audiences, and potentially, bring change.
3What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
Constant change, groundbreaking technology, and creative freedom.
4Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Not necessarily one person- but, so many people that I’ve worked with throughout my career who have had the drive, vision, and ability to capture moments in time, creating extraordinary video pieces that are a pleasure to watch and experience.
5If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in creative industry, what would it be?
Don’t ever stop learning.
6Finally, what is your key to success?
I never believe that I know it all. I am always looking for new technology and new methods to add to those I already use. I am not afraid to try something I’ve never done before. I am not afraid to fail.
