Interview with the 2019 Muse Design Awards Winner - Nico Ueberholz

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself, your company, job profile, etc.
I, Nico Ueberholz, founded the design office Ueberholz GmbH in 1986. I studied communication design and architecture. I come from an old family of architects. My great-grandfather was a Prussian architect. I love design, light, and shadow; the combination of shapes and different materials. The Ueberholz GmbH designs mainly with exhibition design, but also with building construction architecture and the construction of showrooms. In the office, we are a versatile team of communication and product designers, architects and freelancers from a wide variety of fields.

For our projects, we develop and design all products ourselves and coordinate the material precisely to the project.
2Tell us a bit about your business and what you do.
The Ueberholz GmbH designs mainly exhibition design but also builds construction architecture as well as the construction of showrooms. In the office, we are a versatile team of communication and product designers, architects and freelancers from a wide variety of fields.

For our projects, we develop and design all products ourselves and coordinate the material precisely to the project.

We design, build and control.
Our customers have only one contact person. We live the design and the brand of our customers.
3Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 Muse Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
We are very proud of this special award in the field of architecture. Precisely because we see our work with attention to detail, to the effect of light and shadow, to forms and material. This award is very valuable to us. Only those who have this attention to detail, this love for their work, is always enthusiastic about new things to design, to combine, to try out.
4Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 Muse Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
After our design office, our multifunctional workspace building is the second building that we designed, planned and built entirely on our own. It shows the diversity of our designs and our skills. It is different than anything else. It is a homage to our wonderful environment and nature. Through the mirrored alucobond surface, it becomes a complete unity with the unbending nature, the tree, the sky, the frost in winter. It is as infinite and changeable as our creativity and design. Not to commit to a matter, everything goes, everything is allowed to be, everything unfolds its unique beauty in light and shadow, in structure and form.

The multifunctional workspace is a chameleon inside and out. It can be used for multimedia company presentations as well as for mindfulness classes in the evening - a truly unique space with infinite magic.
5What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The joint play of the Alucobond plates. The joint play harmoniously supports the structure and shape of the structure.
6How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

The response to this special and beautiful prize is quite good. It is an award that stands out for its special shape. Thanks for that. However, there were, unfortunately, no requests for the construction of other objects.
7What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
My three favorite pastimes are the challenge of designing something new, the excitement of dealing with new materials and highlighting and staging objects with light.
8What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?
I think Germany is still specialized in quality. Our used materials are of high quality and cleanly processed to the highest standards. That makes us unique in this creative industry.
9Where do you see the evolution of the creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
It is difficult to foresee the development in the creative industries over the next five to ten years. It will certainly develop extremely fast in the field of technical equipment. Here, we can already see that in the field of LED technology, projector technology, and Hololenses is extremely developed. We will also be able to get even lighter in the field of materials. Nature is a role model for our architecture in so many ways, for our entire industry.
10If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring Muse Award submitter, what advice would you give them?
Enjoy your work, design new things and love it so hard that you can fight. When it's hard, adapt and believe in yourself. Creativity is like breathing; master it and you'll be successful.
11What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the creative industry?
Observe, have strong confidence in yourself, be adaptable towards the customers and there will always a chance for your ideas to show.
12Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
I can't stop being creative.
13Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Not a person but nature has inspired me since childhood. There is nothing more wonderful like our nature, no camera takes better photos than our eyes; there is nothing more mysterious than our body, there is no better architect and painter than our nature.
14What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Everything you do, do it with love. I love my profession.
15Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?
Sometimes, it is a pity that customers are often not brave enough to give good designers more flexibility. When there's flexibility, it's boundlessly awesome.
