Interview with the 2019 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Maureen Hung & Connie Tang

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

There are two members in the team, Maureen and Connie. With an innate desire to create fun and beautiful things, we headed to London to study in University of Art London.

Maureen focused in Fashion Womenswear at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, subsequently earning her MA from the Royal College of Art in London.  After graduating, she worked for a few of the industry’s most influential designers, John Galliano (Paris), Hussein Chalayan (London) and Handkerchief Production (Hong Kong).

Meanwhile, Connie studied retail design in London College of Communications and started her own fashion trading business after she returned to Hong Kong.

In additional our fashion background, we both are also passionate in art sculpture, especially in ceramics.  We experimented with different ways to integrate the sculpting skills and fashion skill in our upcycled jewelry and art work, and finally become our new business.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

We are very new to the jewelry industry as we were both working on Apparel fashion before this. We always have a thought that fashion can also be a vehicle that are able to deliver messages to our customers like a wearable art piece. Instead of seeing the artwork inside the gallery, we prefer the art work be worn and go from the gallery to everywhere.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Mother nature has spoken – it’s time for a second chance. It breaks our hearts as we witness the avalanche of plastic waste produced on a daily basis, and this is when W;nk steps in to sprinkle some of its whimsical fairy dust. When life throws you plastic, make style happen!

4What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

Our favorite kind of design is the design that contains its function well, beautiful, fun to see, and being able to touch one’s heart.

5To you, what makes a “good” design?

A good design has to fulfill practical needs as well as being beautiful. However, the best design also communicates well to the audience, like a work of art. We are trying our best to work towards this way.

6Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

W;nk is where the fingers of beloved moments meet the soul of touch. Our design atelier of planned spontaneity is a never-ending experimentation of materials and ideas, a celebration of the poetic craftsmanship of the hands.

Sensual, emotional and playfully intellectual, our works are a language in themselves. a romantic n its own way.

7Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 MUSE Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Thank you very much to MUSE Awards. It is a very great honor to us and this gives a lot of encouragement for us as a new started company.

8Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 MUSE Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

‘Ksana’ is our first collection for W;nk. It's inspired by concept of "Rebirth" in the Buddhist philosophy in a romantic way. This is an artistic liberation from time and space, where it's poetically fabricated to preserve all the fleeting instants, every hand-sculpted piece.

9What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The unique logo mark is originated from the Chinese little hero font with the slim profile of tea leaves, which represents the shape of the aroma. The design inspiration comes from the tale of the partridge. By adopting a pure white background, it depicts a partridge resting on the tree in line. The high-end packaging originates from an abstract conception of Buddhism as the Chinese word "Kon", with the Dong Shan hill being a Buddhist shrine.

10How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Taking into account the diversification and homogenization of products today, the partridge tea is developed on the basis of their own innovation. Packaging design is crucial to facilitate end-consumer purchase and improve consumer user experience. The innovation of Zhe Gu Tea packaging cannot be self-centered nor simple, and it must meet the market. We will continue to design and hope for good results.

We love this collection and this is one of our key collection that is also a reflection of ourselves too.
