Interview with the 2019 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Ho Kuan Teck

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I was born in a family which does embroidery business for generations, I was under the influence of my mother since young and was obsessed with leather handicraft while I was still schooling. I graduated in 3D animation and I worked as 3D artist more than 16 years for movie effects and game development. With this 3D modelling skill, I can easily translate my drawing to 3d object or mock-up.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

I love everything related to art, and this enthusiasm made me a designer.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

The company's main focus is to create luxury handmade leather products with own design. My main job is to design and develop the bag designs. I'm also a leather bag crafter. I love the whole process of finishing the bag and sending it to the customer. To me, the whole process of “from idea to delivery to customer ” is all related. It's a kind of relationship and connection.

4What does “design” mean to you?

To design is to create something that can be related for daily use or for the user's life and attitude.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

My favourite is turning abstraction into physical design. To me, design contains emotions, but emotions are difficult to be extracted for design.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

Strong ideas and concept make a “good” design.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

My design style is more on blending the shape and keywords. more like translating the abstract into shape, where most of my bag design is structured and clean.

8Tell us about your design process.

Before designing, I will try to understand a keyword, idea or requirements, looking for inspiration from the surroundings and brainstorming the idea, then develop all this element and translate to design.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

Yes it has an impact on my design process. I live in Singapore, and the culture of Singapore is a combination of Asian and European cultures. Influenced by Malay, South Asian, East Asian, and Eurasian cultures, Singapore has been dubbed as a country where "East meets West".

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 MUSE Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

As a winner of the 2019 MUSE Awards, it is a kind assessment as it will keep me and my company and team to not give up. As a company we will keep create more and more good designs in future.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 MUSE Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

The reason I choose this project to enter into the 2019 Muse Awards is because this project for us is a design that can fully abstract feelings and symbols to a real product and it have a very special twist handle which is people can't found in the market. This design is considered one of the iconic to present our brand and company.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

There was a challenge to create a handbag blended from shape and symbol while being minimalist. From the main structure to handle, it was a big challenge to make the handle twist perfectly without a cut. It is a big surprise for us when the perfect angle is found.

13What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

Conceptual, designing and teamwork.

14What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?

It's really hard for me to explain this question, I would like to skip it.

15Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?

Creativity is always inseparable from people's lives, so even in the next 5 to 10 years, it will still play this important role.

16If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Award submitter, what advice would you give them?

Learn from mistakes and always request criticisms. Even now, I'm still welcome people to critique my design, then I can collect comments to improve myself or my design.

17What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the creative industry?

Collect comments to improve themselves and the design and observe more from everyday life.

18Tell us something you have never told anyone else.

I am unbelievably shy.

19Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My mom is the one who inspired me the most, when I was young I love to see her design embroidery florals and pattern.

20What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

As I always said, think out of the box. Life is the source of inspiration. As long as you work hard, you will always be rewarded.

21Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

No, that's all
