Interview with the 2019 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Heng Hsin Huang

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

My name is Heng Hsin Huang and I am the director of OME design. My experience in design extends from majoring in design during university and graduate school studies to working in this industry for many years. My main areas of focus are space design and product development. I chose to become a designer because I wanted to use my design skills to help others and make a lasting contribution to society. I enjoy working together with our clients, who are filled with inspiration and ideas, to create designs that tell a story.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Becoming a designer has enabled me to explore the connections between time, space, and self. It allows us to impart our existence onto our surroundings, which persists over the gradual lapse of time and evolution of our surroundings. I really cherish the impact an interior designer can have on the world around us.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

OME Design limits the number of projects we take on because we wish to personalize our services and provide special attention to each client. People are our priority, and we hold ourselves to a high standard to rigorously carry out their visions. The design process can sometimes be fast-paced, but we execute each design meticulously to guarantee client satisfaction.

4What does “design” mean to you?

Design means expressing and achieving the vision of a client through aesthetics and visual communication.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I like modern and futuristic designs. Those designs are the ones that best allow me to explore the unknown. I'm completely free to create without boundaries or limits, and there are infinite possibilities of where it may lead.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A good design is not only pleasing to the eye but also possesses innovative ideas, a clear philosophy, and strong values.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

Our design style aims to incorporate sharp geometry, cooler colors, an interplay of light and shadow and a futuristic vision.

8Tell us about your design process.

First, we listen to the needs of the client and try to help them express their ideas clearly. We place ourselves in their shoes to realize their needs and basic requirements. Then, we put forth a design and confirm the plan with the client. After that, we visit the site before construction begins and throughout the process to ensure that the construction accurately executes the design. We check each detail, from the smallest measurements to the overall appearance to anticipate any problems that may arise. We continue to do so until construction has been completed and the client’s vision successfully realized. Finally, we review each case and discuss so that the team continues to learn and strengthen our skills.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

I was born in Hong Kong, which is one of the most modern and international Asian cities connected to fashion and design. I live in Taiwan. It is truly a treasure island, full of humanity, culture, and customs.

My design is influenced by the modern fashion of Hong Kong, combined with Taiwan’s knack for storytelling of life's experiences.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 MUSE Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

There is still room for continuous progress. MUSE is an international competition that brings together 60 countries, allowing everyone a chance to compete with many outstanding teams from around the world. Regardless of whether I win an award or not, it is an unforgettable experience!

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 MUSE Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

It is a tremendous honor. However, there's still room for improvement, and we will continue pushing forward and strive for excellence.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The biggest challenge of this project was to try and fully capture a person’s personality and behaviors and then express that through the design.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

I understand even more clearly that creativity is the core of design. As my career develops, I will spend more time and energy sharpening my creativity and its practical applications.

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. Success is direct and tangible. Our designs can directly help others, and we can measure success through client satisfaction..

2. We serve clients by using our expertise to solve their problems. They might start with a semblance of an idea or even not exactly know what they want. We are able to help them express their ideas. We're also able to personalize their designs and then carry their thoughts through to fruition.

3. One of the greatest joys of this profession is seeing and appreciating the joy in clients’ faces when they see their ideas fully expressed through the designs. That is truly a reward in and of itself.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?

The international view and the spirit of continuous progress.

16Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I believe in the near future, there will be more and more environmentally-friendly building materials introduced. The number of design projects will steadily increase, building material costs will fall, and more people will appreciate the role that design plays in our daily lives. Design will extend beyond functional planning to becoming a much-desired aspect of quality of life.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Award submitter, what advice would you give them?

Go through every step of the process diligently. Embrace every moment with an open mind to self-reflect and seek progress.

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the creative industry?

To improve their creative skills, designers should open themselves up to international design competitions. They should also read up on role models and mentors in the field of design to learn from them. They should also step out of the design studio and observe the actual implementation on-site to witness how their ideas are transformed into construction and through to project completion.

19What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

“Only Rembrandt can paint Rembrandt’s paintings.”

It's essential to constantly seek improvement and progress. We must keep this in mind as we complete each project. Do not be complacent nor satisfied with good enough. We must motivate ourselves to keep pushing forward in order enhance our creativity and further develop our skills.
