Interview with the 2018 Muse Creative Awards Winner - Diogo Gama Rocha

1First, tell us about yourself, your company, job profile, etc.
I realized very early that design was my future. I was always curious and a tireless observer, creativity, art, and industry were always in my life, from the day I was born. I inherited my love for art from my maternal grandparents, who were painters, and my fascination with industry and management came from my father. So, I ended up learning about these areas every day and being a designer happened to be a natural choice for me. I studied design and in 1998 founded Omdesign. Since then, fortunately, during these 20 years, the company has never stopped to grow.
2Tell us a bit about your business and what you do.
At Omdesign, we work our customers’ brands every day, always with the goal to meet their requirements and to surprise their clients – the final consumer –, by presenting the best solutions. The strong relationships that Omdesign’s team has built over the last 20 years are the result of the dedication and the unique way the agency embraces each project, always offering its clients innovative and highly effective solutions.
3Congratulations! As the winner of the 2018 Muse Creative Awards, what does winning this award mean to you and your team?
It is an enormous pride to be recognized once more by the Muse Creative Awards’ jury and, in this way, to keep showing across borders the best of Portuguese design. These awards are the result of our quality, excellence, irreverence and permanent dissatisfaction, which allow us to exceed the expectations of our customers with the highly differentiating solutions we built for each project.
4Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
Luckily, the creative industry is in permanent evolution, in terms of production processes and materials, as well as the solutions presented, so I believe that in the next 5-10 years we will see even more innovative solutions. I think that materials will be simple and the production increasingly sophisticated.
5What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
I can refer, for instance: - Design and advertising areas are constantly in progress, so every day is a new challenge. - The daily need to analyze each brand and always present the best solution for each one is also a plus that makes each day as a single day. - We don't have routines, which is an advantage because it develops our ability to improvise and challenge ourselves.
6Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Undoubtedly my grandparents, both painters, are, even nowadays, one of my main sources of inspiration, like my father, to whom I owe the fascination for the world of management. Audacity, accuracy, and excellence are also a daily inspiration' source and are reflected in the recognition we get from our clients and from the consumers that use the brands we proudly work with.
7What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?
We Portuguese, when we want, are unique in the art of doing well in several fields of activity and design is not an exception. Portugal is globally recognized for its resiliency and work capacity, allied to its quality.
8If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in creative industry, what would it be?
Never give up your dreams, and work, work, work to be different and surprise your clients. This is my sincere advice to be successful in the creative industry as in other sectors.
9What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the advertising industry?
Create always distinctive and innovative solutions is the secret and never forget that the simplicity is a plus because often (if not always) less is more.
10Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
I love what I do and I’m privileged to do what I do.
11Finally, what is your key to success?
I really believe that the key to success is hard work, every day, with excellence, accuracy, and know-how. It's also extremely important to be ambitious, bold, and want to do things better and differently day after day, as well as to have a close relationship with clients and partners. If we have this positive attitude, the success comes naturally.
