Hsu Ti-Pin

Hsu Ti-Pin, director of Muyi Creation and design consultant for top hospitality and architectural brands, has spent over a decade refining material combinations and aesthetic proportions to create balanced, elegant spaces.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I am the Director of Muyi Creation and a design consultant for various chain restaurants, hotels, and architectural brands. I have been engaged in this field for over a decade and have lived in the United States for a period of time.

I hold a Master’s degree from the Academy of Art University. I have rich and innovative design concepts and admire the integration of aesthetics. I assert and highly praise local life aesthetics, and strive for a balance between design and functionality.

I also value the combinations and applications of materials, as well as the aesthetic proportion.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

I have worked in the luxury furniture industry and understand how different countries, cultural backgrounds, and artistic education influence environmental aesthetics.

After years of experience and facing challenges, I realize that embodying beauty requires consideration of different customers, demands, locations and environments in order to create splendid sparks during the design process.

As time progressed, I gradually recognized my responsibilities toward the social environment. I want to be part of the change and carry this aesthetic into new environments and markets.

In the future, I look forward to collaborate with different industries to jointly promote the aesthetic life. I also embrace the integration of resources from both new and established generations to further inspire those interested in this field.

This is not only a career choice but also a sense of mission. It motivates us to proactively create an impact on people during the design process.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

Muyi Creation has years of extensive experience in designing both business and residential spaces. We have collaborated with renowned architects, residential developers, chain stores, international brands, medical groups, and luxury home builders to create spaces tailored to their needs.

Our team possesses professional certifications in both design and engineering, and our advantageous position in aesthetics, enabling us to elevate the image of the spaces we create.

In recent years, we have been featured in interviews and reports by renowned publications while also making efforts to obtain domestic and international awards.

Muyi Creation not only has a professional design team but is also dedicated to promoting aesthetic culture in my country and collaborating with young talents to shape a better future.

4What does “design” mean to you?

For me, design is about solving users' problems and optimizing solutions through the lenses of art and aesthetics, grounded in sound principles of logic.

Design and life are inseparable. They not only meet practical needs but also fulfill our definitions of beauty.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I often travel to Europe and the United States, where I have developed a deep admiration for classic and timeless designs. I believe people should be more open to embracing the integration and coexistence of the new and the old.

These experiences have deepened my understanding of design, and I aspire for my work to maintain its unique charm and value as time goes on.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

To make a good design, the most important thing is to always be people-oriented. Every space design must fully consider people's needs in life and the functionality it provides, based on fundamental principles.

Only by doing so can the space truly serve its users. Instead of choosing visually striking materials, we want to return to the fundamental aspects: A truly good design provides not only visual enjoyment but also emotional resonance.

It should allow people to experience the comfort and warmth that the design of the space brings.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
We wish to, through the technique of preserving elegant materials and aesthetic details, design each space elaborately to meet both practical and refined living needs.
8Tell us about your design process.
Summarize important information using clear, effective, and rational logic, while exploring various possibilities with an open-minded thinking. From this foundation, create a simple yet exceptional and durable design that stands out.
9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

My country's diverse culture and tolerance enable the design industry to freely unleash and explore different possibilities in such a rich environment.

Collaboration with peers and different industries also makes the possibilities of creation even more engaging.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2023 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
I am very grateful for the judges’ recognition. This award not only acknowledges our design abilities but also encourages us to influence the culinary culture through the fusion of aesthetics.
11What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The biggest challenge in designing this chair was balancing the interpretation of the concept of reversal while maintaining its functionality. Additionally, approaching such a small scale from an architect’s perspective, especially in comparison to architecture, was also a difficult task.
12Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

Introduction to the Design:

In collaboration with a hot pot restaurant brand, this project has adopted design aesthetics to enhance the expression of culinary culture.

Our goal is to transform the dining space into a distinctive and exotic art environment to offer customers a truly unique dining experience. Inspired by the 'simmering and drizzling' techniques of making a soup base, this design presents rich layers of space through a blend of multiple tones and textures.

By integrating Nanyang culture with contemporary art, the space creates a unique atmosphere.

Reasons for Participating in the Competition:

We are motivated by the challenge and opportunity presented by our customers to infuse exotic culture and style into the dining space. In this project, we aimed to introduce a new style and design that brings an innovative and artistic atmosphere to the traditional dining experience.

We have always enjoyed challenging different styles in various projects, as such challenges inspire our creativity and make our designs more unique and layered. Therefore, joining this competition is very meaningful for us.

13What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The exterior of the building's front is wrapped in metal sheeting to evoke the imagery of a departure from origami art. It is challenging not only to create a long exterior in sections but also to consider its interaction with the internal space.

Therefore, from the entrance to the central kitchen island, we have thoughtfully designed different styles on the left and right sides, and have them all connected. This is truly a challenging task.

14How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Apart from the recognition this award brings, we have significantly increased the visibility of Muyi Creation's official website.

Moreover, this honor has strengthened our confidence in our brand and encourages our team to think more comprehensively at work while deepening our commitment to practicing aesthetics.

15What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

1. Innovative designs can broaden explorations of new things.

2. The influence of different people and things on our designs can enrich our experiences.

3. The ability to solve problems through conceptualization and planning.

16What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

My country's diverse culture and tolerance enable the design industry to freely unleash and explore different possibilities in such a rich environment.

Collaboration with peers and different industries also makes the possibilities of creation even more engaging.

17Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

The design industry has undergone significant reforms, and versatile talents will definitely have advantages in the future. Design is no longer limited to styling and aesthetics; it must now incorporate business value.

Designers need to understand market demands, products, and integrated AI tools, while also learning to develop strategic, systematic, and branding thinking based on the economic model that reflects the characteristics of their products.

18If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

The design industry is full of creativity and challenges. Designers must not only satisfy customers' needs but also value aesthetics, environmental protection, energy efficiency, business considerations, and other factors.

From my point of view, professionals in the design industry require a commitment to continuous learning, as well as an open mind and attitude toward development.

19What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

An enormous amount of reading information and site surveys. Reading helps us manage the objective dynamics and latest trends in the market, while site surveys enable us to gain first-hand experiences and deepen our understanding and perspectives.

This allows us to make better judgments. By engaging in these practices, we can integrate theory and reality; and, through verification and implementation, we can continuously refine and enhance our professional skills.

This is a journey of exploration and growth, and I look forward to seeing more outstanding talents shine in this field.

20Who has inspired you in your life and why?

Every customer and every project provides me with the opportunity to see things from different perspectives and positions. During this process, I respect and weigh traditional culture and emerging ideas equally.

Living and growing with customers and exchanging ideas with them is an enriching journey and invaluable experience. This kind of interaction not only inspires creativity but also brings more vitality to designs.

Every collaboration is like a new discovery, through which we grow and progress together with our customers.

21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Quick correction and quick integration. During work, we emphasize effective communication. Through interactions, we continuously discover their characteristics and advantages, which allow us to make adjustments accordingly and ultimately achieve the best results.

This process allows us to continue realizing self-improvement while pursuing excellence.
