As Ryo Utsunomiya trekked through the wilds of Hokkaido in late autumn, his search for the perfect photograph was a journey filled with anticipation. Every step into the crisp, cool air was a step deeper into a landscape waking under the early morning light. The transition from night to day was gradual, the sky shifting through shades of dark to light, casting the wilderness in a fresh glow.
On a morning marked by a sky transforming from deep indigo to rich amber, his patience finally paid off. In a clearing framed by the soft light of dawn, a stag appeared, its silhouette sharp against the backlight of the rising sun. The stag, powerful yet poised, seemed to acknowledge Ryo's presence, their eyes meeting across the distance. In that fleeting moment, there was a mutual recognition, a shared space between photographer and subject, set against the backdrop of the awakening bush.
The dawn in the image unfurls a color palette that shifts from the deep, contemplative blues of early morning to the vibrant, hopeful oranges and pinks of sunrise. Ryo Utsunomiya was honored as the Photographer of the Year (Professional) at the 2024 MUSE Photography Awards in the category of Nature Photography - Wildlife, celebrating his exceptional talent and dedication to capturing the essence of the natural world.

In a scene that could be ripped from a dystopian novel, a man walks through a wasteland that starkly mirrors the desolation of a post-apocalyptic world, yet this is the 21st century. As the day draws to a close, the dump takes on an otherworldly quality. The air grows gothic grey, thick and tangible, woven with the acrid smoke of burning trash that sends up living flames into the dusky sky.
These fragments are scavenged by those left behind, seeking whatever valuables the flames unearth in the debris. It is a bleak tableau, capturing a moment of survival and desperation at the close of another day. This harsh reality, observed through the lens of a photographer, reflects a striking contrast between human endurance and environmental decay.
The desolate scene at the dump photographed by João Coelho serves as a stark reminder of the world's deep-seated inequalities. As dusk settles, the dark hues of the environment paint a somber picture, reinforcing the grim reality faced by those scavenging to survive amid the refuse.
