Anastasia Shik

Anastasia Shik is a passionate artist and photographer whose journey began with an antique camera gifted by her grandmother. Guided by an influential mentor, she developed a distinct artistic vision, drawing inspiration from her models’ energy and individuality, seeing herself as a conduit for shaping their stories through her lens.

1Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?
My name is Anastasia Shik and I am an artist. When I was a teen, I received an antique camera from my grandmother, and though outdated, I still enjoyed it. I really enjoyed taking photos; it was a lot of fun.
2Where did you study photography?
I was fortunate to encounter my photography teacher, whose artistic vision resonated deeply with my own. A safe and supportive setting allowed me to develop my artistic vision and professional direction.
3Do you remember your first shot? What was it?
My initial photography experience happened when I turned 14. It was a self portrait. That experience was incredibly interesting and impactful, allowing me to see myself not as a reflection but as an independent entity viewed through a lens.
4What equipment do you use?
I work with Canon at the moment.
5What do you hope to achieve?
To simply persist in my current endeavors, I feel, would be my most significant achievement.
6What compliment inspired/touched you the most?
A key moment of inspiration and validation was my selection as a MA-G Awards finalist by Graciela Iturbide; it fueled my determination to persevere.
7What inspires your unique storytelling?
I draw the most inspiration from my models. I've always admired their energy, life vision and unique personalities they hold. I wouldn’t consider that being my storytelling. I serve only as a tool for shaping the stories of others.
8Congratulations! As the winner of the New York Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?
Thank you! It is a very big honor to receive such accomplishment. As I speak for those who struggle to make themselves heard, despite their desperate pleas, this could mean people are listening, and that’s a great outcome.
9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the New York Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
The winning works are a part of my art project “Social Antisocial Life”, where I am trying to explore human nature through the lens of sexuality. Social life is a struggle for me. But I know I am not the only one. I hope this project will help others struggling to find belonging and acceptance.
10How has winning an award developed your career?
Given it’s brand-new news, I think commenting now would be premature. It needs more time for reflection, both personally and professionally.
11Name 1-3 photographers who have inspired you.
My photography journey has been significantly shaped by three key figures: my teacher Igor Novikov, the inspiring photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, and Graciela Iturbute, whose belief in my work has been invaluable.
12What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?

1. Start to call yourself a photographer NOW.

2. Proof that you can do something unique.

I still follow these advice!

13What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?
Embrace your true self; disregard anyone who tries to stifle your authenticity. Don’t be scared to make mistakes. Don’t be afraid to fall. Have a fall! Before reinventing yourself, make sure to break down your current state.
14What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
You are the key to your Success. Only you. How far you will go depends only on you. Don’t look around, look inside.
15How do you stay in that space of being receptive to new information and knowledge?
Our era is characterized by an unavoidable deluge of information. I try to filter this information to work with it effectively, rather than simply absorbing it. I do select reliable sources, increase my knowledge, and surround myself with a personal support group.
16Anything else you would like to add to the interview?
I would like to thank all participants and jurors. Being surrounded by such professionals was a true privilege. Wishing you all the best!
