Did you know that somewhere in the ocean right now, there is enough plastic waste in the blue ocean that is the size of a small island that is currently floating around the Pacific? But that’s not all, the very same plastic that is killing off our glorious marine life could very well be rolling around in your mouth right now!
You may not know this, but most, if not all, chewing gums on the market right now are made with a mix of natural and synthetic ingredients and materials, including synthetic rubber that is also used in the manufacturing of vehicle tyres as well as the aforementioned plastic.
In an effort to satiate the sweet tooth of people worldwide, all the while reducing the amount of plastic that ends back up in the ocean, legendary confectioner and sweets company from Netherlands BenBits teamed up with PlusOne to create a marketing campaign that reflects on the company’s new environmental message through the only way they know how: A musical!
BenBits newest sweet on the block is, you guessed it, chewing gum. But this isn’t any old chewing gum that you’re used to chewing on, the candy is 100% made with natural ingredients such as peppermint and spearmint for a refreshing treat, but where the candy starts to shine is the gum part of the sweet. Which is natural gum from the Chicozapote Tree in Mexico. So that even if you dispose of it, it will decompose and return to the earth once more. Oh, and so is the packaging. Not an ounce of plastic is found even in the little packets and box!
While BenBits is perfecting their new sweets, so is PlusOne over at Amsterdam, as they start work on a marketing campaign to remember. Still haunted by the video of a sea turtle having a plastic straw pulled out from its nose, the animators decided to use the same animal and portray it in a positive light where they do their part in cleaning up the plastic waste in their homes in a cutesy musical.
To top it all off, a portion of all profits made from the BenBits’ sales goes directly to the Plastic Soup Foundation, a non-profit marine conservation organization that helps further the vision of a plastic-free ocean.
If you have a sweet tooth for chewing gum and love the ocean and the marine wildlife within, keep an eye out for BenBits' sugar-free chewing gum if you’re ever walking around the Netherlands!
