Interview with the 2019 Muse Design Awards Winner - Barbara Amerio

1Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.
We are an Italian shipyard founded in 1973 and specialized in custom superyacht building. Our focus is innovation, eco-sustainability and high quality based on Italian labor, material and suppliers. Building a superyacht in the range of 94’-120’ is a one/two years process involving about 200/300 people. It is very complex work as this luxury floating residence has to navigate and resist against external agents.
2What does “design” mean to you?
Beauty & functionality. The combination has to create an emotion.
3What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
External nautical lines, the superyacht profile at the sea.
4To you, what makes a “good” design?
Touching the people's desires.
5Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
Amer Yachts style has a distinguishing sign. Symmetry in general arrangements. This classic imprinting comes from Palladio and renaissance influences that are being translated in a modern version.
6Tell us about your design process.
The design process is a long team work among several experts, naval architect, engineers, client’s involvement and shipyard supervision.
7Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Italy is considered one of the most famous countries for design, fashion and art , Italians have in their DNA a strong aesthetic predominance due at our historical past. Our heritage is precious and still present in our art expression. Italian are at the top in many sectors as in nautical one where the 46% of Superyacht world production comes from Italy. So proud to be part of the industry.
8Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 MUSE Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
Amer Yachts has received several awards in last decade. 2019 Muse Award for us is a great milestone and is an international achievement never obtained before in our sector. We are proud and grateful that the Jury has selected Amer F 100 for the higher platinum award. This new model is dedicated to the founder Mr. Fernando Amerio and means a lot for all of us.
9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 MUSE Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
The 2019 MUSE AWARDS is the perfect way to publish a new project in an international level, a world design community that is able to celebrate the best in design. Being part of this community is a goal for our company and could create synergies for the future for our brand Amer Yachts.
10What was the biggest challenge with this project?
Bring natural light accessible in all the three decks. There is a blue mind therapy in be surrounded by the sea where it permits the guests to switch their burnout state due to the life stresses in a more relaxed and healthy state. The increase of the natural light by the larger crystals reducing the use of fiberglass where we use dark colours as the black and through the different materials used like metal, reflex materials or matte surfaces, you can use light as real décor element always different depending on the sun inclination. We have increased of the 105% crystal surfaces on the main deck compared to the previous model and 38% for the lower deck. The design result is amazing as there is no space where you lose the eye’s contact with the sea. All of these are done without compromising neither weight and speed performances and saves electrical energy. There are no vibrations at all to respect the silent and peaceful sea life.
11How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Visibility, be part of an international community and satisfaction for everyone involved.
12What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
Innovation , Italian design and eco-sustainability.
13What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?
Italian origins are from Greece and Romain Empire roots where philosophy and beauty are solid bases in art culture.
Growing up with these classic influences and adopting new design concepts of functionality and are always looking for different new materials bring you to obtain a very sophisticated work, a timeless and contemporary style with a maniac precision for details and finishing.
What we call “ Bello e ben fatto” typical distinguishing of made in Italy.
14Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I hope that the common sense will be to save the planet, where we adopt smart solutions, introducing circular economy in the design process and in the industrial production and by remanufacturing.
We have to do for us and for the future generations.
More share economies and no waste material creativity. We have already started several years ago.
15If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Award submitter, what advice would you give them?
Try and try again, obtaining such a important award can give you international recognition and be recognized as a creative professional among the masses.
16Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
In the industry, the more profits you gain, the more you will have to give back to the community. This is absolutely necessary and has to be done. Don’t forget it.
17Who has inspired you in your life and why?
My family, good teachers, good reading, travelling all over the world, culture contamination and my epic curiosity has been inspiring in my life.
Empathy, collaboration, ethic and respect are my keywords.

Family feeling.
