Interview with the 2019 Muse Creative Awards Winner - Sven Dreesbach

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself, your company, job profile, etc.
My name is Sven Dreesbach. I am a freelance filmmaker and the founder of Revolutio Creative, a small media & post-production shop located in Los Angeles, CA. We specialize in visual effects, color & finishing, but also develop, produce, and deliver branded content.
2Tell us a bit about your business and what you do.
I initially solely focused on post-production, but Revolutio has been successfully producing content like music videos and social media, since 2016. What started as occasional side gigs, has been growing into more creative and production work with the help of producer Julia Etzelmueller and appears to take up more of our time in the near future.
3Congratulations! As the winner of the 2019 Muse Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
We are beyond delighted and count the 4 Muse Awards for our Apple commissioned short documentary as one of our biggest accomplishments. The Muse Awards are one of the top creative awards in advertising, and a trophy can only help us boost our exposure which is really exciting.
4Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2019 Muse Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
The Reef was our biggest collaboration with Apple to date. Since it was a commissioned piece, we developed and produced to the entire package directly. It comes without saying that it is important for us to share the result in order to underline our company's abilities beyond post.
5What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The initial shoot with my small crew, accompanied by the client, was scheduled for a period of 8 days, which is not much when your objective is documenting wildlife in the ocean.

Unfortunately, due to heavy rain and a rather stormy sea, we weren't able to spot any whale sharks or much other megafauna during the entire initial shooting period. Luckily, I had enough flexibility to extend my stay for two more weeks. After just the research team of the MWSRP and I were left on Dhigurah, Maldives, everything changed in our favour. The ocean calmed down. The sun came out, and the first whale sharks started popping up. It was smooth sailing for those two weeks and, Poseidon be thanked, I returned to L.A. with hours of footage on our drives.
6What are your top three (3) favourite things about our industry?
There are many things in our industry that make at least most days exciting. Meeting new people, like collaborators or clients, and shape not only professional, but over time also personal relationships, is an important part of sure.

The technological and creative progress can be challenging, but bringing ideas and your craft to the table to shape something new that speaks to the audience is incredibly gratifying.

The best moments are when you actually have the privilege to the part of something that's bigger than a brand. Something that has the chance to contribute to a social or environment cause, like The Reef or our title sequence work on a documentary for the SPLC for example.
7Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
Technology and art will become more democratic. Everybody who uses a smart phone for taking photos already seems to have gallery representation on digital platforms like Instagram and become the curators of their own work. The tools to be part of the creative industry have never been any more accessible and people will have to search ways to express themselves and find their voice among an ever growing crowd of creatives.
8If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring Muse Award submitter, what advice would you give them?
Picking up the craft might take years, so be patient. Perseverance is a necessary evil. But more than about craft, the creative industry is about having ideas. Ideas come with experience. So experience life to the fullest you can imagine for yourself. Leave your comfort zone. Absorb. Read. Travel. Collaborate. Grow. Find the right people and help them. Grow together.
9What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the creative industry?
Schools are an amazing playground to let it all out and experiment with people who share the same goal. You will build lifelong relationships. So if you have the chance, do it!

Alternatively the internet has become a great public forum and resource for knowledge today.

And in the end, the colder the water, the quicker you will learn swimming. With or without a degree.
10Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
Only a few people know that I haven't watch Star Wars.
11Who has inspired you in your life and why?
My family has inspired me a lot. Everybody, my mum, my dad and my brother in their own way. They are in Germany. I miss them.
12What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
Be patient. Don't give up. Finish what you started even if it's just for your own personal growth and the learning experience.
