1First, tell us about yourself, your company, job profile, etc.
I have been part of the legal marketing industry since 2006; after working in sales for several years, I decided to strike out on my own and start my own boutique agency. I take a hands-on approach to leading my company and my team. I am proud of the team I have assembled, but I never want to be that boss who only shows up at the holiday party, or who comes in a few times a year to make everyone nervous. I very much enjoy being in the weeds, developing strategy, analyzing data – all of it.
2Tell us a bit about your business and what you do.
MediaSmack is a full-service legal marketing agency, so we do it all: web design, social media marketing, PPC. However, in our approach, everything comes back to SEO, because that’s what lasts. We want to build sites that do well now, and are also going to stand the test of time. We don’t buy leads, we help our clients get them the right way.
3Congratulations! As the winner of the 2018 Muse Creative Awards, what does winning this award mean to you and your team?
This award is a great honor and a great validation that our approach to web design is not only optimal for SEO but is also user-friendly and innovative.
4Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
More and more, I see the industry turning toward quality, toward interesting outside-the-box thinking. We have more freedom than ever in terms of what we can do with a website, and there are creative minds out there who are going to show us amazing things.
5What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?
1. The challenge – I love a challenge, and I love figuring out the puzzle of what is happening with a site and why.
2. Creativity – Marketing isn’t strictly a formula, there is a creative element, a kind of a wildcard, that makes it almost an art.
3. Change – In digital marketing, no two years are the same. In fact, two weeks are rarely the same. There is always something to learn, something new to try.
6Who has inspired you in your life and why?
I’m inspired by my peers and my team. There are people doing amazing work out there; that inspires the old competitive spirit in me. My wife is also my inspiration.
7What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?
I think there is a wonderful kind of utilitarian quality to US designs. They’re beautiful, but with a purpose.
8If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering a career in creative industry, what would it be?
Dream big, work hard, never give up.
9What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the advertising industry?
Any of the Google tools and training courses. If you’re doing digital marketing, mastering these tools is paramount.
10Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
I’m the king of trivia; I collect random bits of information as a hobby.
Ok, lots of people know that, but I still think it deserves a mention.
11Finally, what is your key to success?
Working hard, but also working smart. It’s important to me that I take a step back now and then and ask myself “is this the best course, for me and for the company?” If it’s not, then it’s time to evolve.
