Osama Elolemy

Osama Elolemy, an award-winning fine art photographer based in Dubai, UAE, transitioned from a background in engineering and fashion photography to pursuing his true passion for storytelling through fine art. Inspired by his travels and the cultures he’s encountered, his work captures the profound connections between humanity and nature, promoting appreciation for traditions and the beauty of existence.

1Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?

I'm Osama Elolemy, an award-winning fine art photographer based in Dubai, UAE. My journey into photography began as a blend of curiosity and passion. Initially, I was drawn to the art of capturing moments through fashion and portrait photography. This passion thrived alongside my career as an engineer, allowing me to explore the creative world while maintaining a technical focus.

Over time, I transitioned into fine art photography, which became my true calling. This shift allowed me to express deeper stories and connections between people and the natural world. My travels, particularly with my wife, have been transformative, taking me to places like Africa, where I’ve witnessed the profound beauty of life and the wisdom of indigenous communities. These experiences have shaped my photographic style and purpose: to promote cultures, traditions, and humanity through my lens.

Photography for me is not just about creating images; it's about inspiring others to reconnect with nature and appreciate the simple, profound truths of existence. It's a journey of exploration, growth, and storytelling, and I feel privileged to share my perspective with the world.

2Where did you study photography?

I didn't pursue formal education in photography through a traditional academic institution. Instead, my journey into photography was largely self-taught, driven by curiosity, passion, and hands-on experience. I immersed myself in learning by experimenting with different techniques, studying the work of renowned photographers, and constantly challenging myself to improve.

Over the years, I also attended workshops, seminars, and exhibitions to gain insights from industry professionals. These experiences, combined with real-world practice and an engineering mindset for precision, allowed me to refine my skills and develop my own unique style. Photography has always been a lifelong learning process for me, and I believe that the best education comes from being curious, exploring the world, and continuously evolving.

3Do you remember your first shot? What was it?
My first shot was done with the same model in an outdoor area, it was more of a commercial shot
4What equipment do you use?

I use a combination of equipment tailored to different photography and videography projects. My primary gear includes:

Cameras: Nikon Z9: This is my go-to camera for fine art and high-resolution photography. It's exceptional for capturing intricate details, making it perfect for exhibitions and professional work.

Lenses: I primarily use Nikkor Z lenses, including the latest 135mm Plena lens, for their outstanding clarity and bokeh.

5What do you hope to achieve?
What I hope to achieve through my photography goes beyond capturing beautiful images. My ultimate goal is to inspire a deeper connection between people, nature, and culture. I want my work to serve as a bridge that brings the stories of diverse communities, traditions, and the natural world to a global audience.
6What compliment inspired/touched you the most?

One of the most touching compliments I’ve ever received came from a viewer at an exhibition, who said, “Your photographs don’t just capture moments—they capture emotions, stories, and the soul of the subject. It feels like I’m stepping into a world I’ve never been to, but somehow, it feels familiar.”

7What inspires your unique storytelling?
My storytelling is inspired by a blend of personal experiences, the people I meet, and the places I explore. At its core, it stems from a deep desire to celebrate the beauty of life in all its forms and to uncover the connections that bind humanity to nature and culture.
8Congratulations! As the winner of the New York Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?
Winning the New York Photography Awards is a tremendous honor, not just for me but for everyone who has supported and collaborated with me along this journey. This distinction is a testament to the passion, dedication, and vision that my team and I pour into every project.
9Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the New York Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
"The Whirling Dance of the Sufi Lady" is a deeply personal and evocative piece that captures the spiritual essence and transcendent energy of the Sufi tradition. This photograph portrays a Sufi dancer mid-whirl, adorned in flowing attire. The interplay of motion, light, and emotion in the image creates a visual metaphor for the dancer’s connection with the divine.
10How has winning an award developed your career?
Winning prestigious awards, like the New York Photography Awards, has had a significant impact on my career, opening doors and providing validation that has helped me grow both professionally and personally.
11Name 1-3 photographers who have inspired you.
Joel Grimes and Brooke Shaden are incredible sources of inspiration! Joel’s mastery of lighting and his dramatic, surreal style create a bold and dynamic impact, while Brooke’s conceptual storytelling and ethereal imagery bring out profound emotions and narratives
12What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?
The best piece of advice I received when starting out was to not just take pictures—tell stories. Your camera is a tool, but your vision and passion are what truly create art.
13What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?
Photography is a vast field—discover what resonates with you. Whether it’s landscapes, portraits, street photography, or fine art, let your interests guide you. When you’re passionate about your subject, your work will naturally stand out.
14What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
My key to success lies in a combination of passion, persistence, and purpose. Photography is more than a career for me; it’s a way to share stories, connect with others, and celebrate the beauty of life. Staying grounded in this purpose has been my guiding light, even during challenges or moments of doubt.
15How do you stay in that space of being receptive to new information and knowledge?
I remind myself that there’s always more to learn, no matter how much experience I have. Approaching situations with curiosity, as if I’m learning for the first time, keeps me open to new perspectives and ideas.
16Anything else you would like to add to the interview?
Photography is more than just capturing what we see—it’s about expressing what we feel and sharing stories that connect us all. Through my lens, I’ve learned that the beauty of life lies in its diversity, simplicity, and resilience. Whether I’m photographing a vast desert, a bustling city, or a moment of quiet spirituality, my goal is to remind people of the interconnectedness of humanity and the natural world.
