Jingyuan Wu

Jingyuan Wu is a creative technologist and filmmaker with a background in architecture and immersive digital art. Her architectural background provided her with a unique perspective on space and environment, which she later merged with technology as she transitioned into digital media.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your creative background.

I’m Jingyuan Wu (Candice), a creative technologist and filmmaker with a background in architecture and immersive digital art. My work bridges the technical and conceptual, using real-time rendering tools, AI, and interactive design to explore speculative futures.

With a passion for storytelling, I create immersive experiences that engage with themes of human interaction, augmented realities, and the role of technology in shaping our environment.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a creative?

I’ve always been fascinated by the potential of storytelling to transport people to new worlds and explore complex ideas. My background in architecture gave me a unique perspective on space and environment, and as I transitioned into digital media, I saw an opportunity to merge those concepts with technology.

The ability to use emerging tools like AI and real-time rendering to build speculative narratives felt like the perfect path to channel my interests in both art and innovation.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I work as a creative technologist and filmmaker, focusing on creating immersive and speculative narratives through a variety of digital mediums. My work spans everything from interactive installations to experimental films, where I explore new technical possibilities while telling stories about the future.

4What does “creativity” mean to you?
To me, creativity is the ability to make connections between seemingly disparate ideas and bring them together in new, unexpected ways. It’s not just about solving problems, but about challenging conventions, exploring possibilities, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible—whether through storytelling, design, or technology.
5To you, what makes a “creative” idea and/or design?
A creative idea or design, in my view, is one that resonates with people on both an intellectual and emotional level. It should provoke thought, spark curiosity, and leave a lasting impact. Creativity comes when an idea is not only novel but also feels relevant to its context—whether that’s through the way it tells a story, its use of technology, or its commentary on society.
6Tell us about your creative and/or design process.

My process typically starts with a core idea or question, often related to technology’s impact on the future. From there, I develop the narrative, considering the emotional experience I want to create.

I work closely with technical tools like Unreal Engine, generative AI, and 3D software to bring these ideas to life, constantly iterating and experimenting with new techniques. Collaboration is also key—I work with a diverse range of people to ensure that the technical and creative aspects align seamlessly.

7What's your favorite part of the creative process and why?

The experimental phase of the creative process is by far my favorite, as it allows for open-ended exploration where technology and creativity intersect. At this stage, I can test new tools and techniques, pushing them beyond their intended uses to discover unexpected results. It’s where I can be most playful and innovative, rethinking how technology can serve the narrative rather than the other way around.

Experimentation opens up a world of possibilities, whether it's using AI to generate visuals or integrating real-time rendering to create interactive environments. This phase allows me to bridge the gap between storytelling and technology in a way that feels organic and exciting, where the boundaries of what’s possible continuously expand.

8Describe your creative style and its main characteristics.

My creative style is rooted in speculative, concept-driven narratives that explore the intersection of technology, storytelling, and future environments. I often draw upon real-time rendering tools like Unreal Engine and AI technologies to craft immersive experiences that challenge our perception of human and machine coexistence.

At the core of my work is an exploration of how technology shapes our world, not just physically but emotionally and intellectually. I enjoy using abstract concepts to drive the narrative, often presenting future worlds where technological advances have integrated seamlessly with everyday life, while also reflecting on the potential consequences of those advances.

This approach allows me to push beyond conventional boundaries and create a space where the technical and the conceptual meet, resulting in works that provoke thought and immerse the audience in speculative futures.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your creativity process?
Growing up in China, where society places great value on collectivity and connection, has definitely influenced my work. The idea of human connection and shared experience is central to much of my storytelling. Even as I explore speculative futures and technological advances, the sense of collective experience—whether through festivals, communal spaces, or shared digital environments—remains a key theme.
10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2024 MUSE Creative Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
This recognition is incredibly meaningful to me as it validates the experimental, boundary-pushing approach I take in my work. It also highlights the importance of speculative storytelling and using technology to address broader themes about our future. It’s an acknowledgment of the collaborative effort that goes into each project, and I’m grateful for the support of my peers and collaborators.
11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2024 MUSE Creative Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

I entered Erasure, a speculative short film that explores a future city built from recycled materials and overlaid with augmented reality. The film questions what we lose when technology erases our connection to the past, and it culminates in a moment of collective reflection during a fireworks show.

I chose to enter Erasure because it represents my ongoing exploration of the balance between the physical and digital worlds, and I believe it reflects both the technical and conceptual aspects of my work.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The biggest challenge was achieving a seamless integration of real-time rendering with the narrative elements. Balancing the technical aspects of creating a visually compelling augmented reality world while ensuring that the story remained emotionally resonant was a complex but rewarding process.
13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?
Winning the award has given me greater visibility and opened up new opportunities for collaboration. It’s a validation of my creative approach and has encouraged me to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with technology and storytelling. It also helps establish credibility in the broader art and tech communities.
14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

What excites me most about the creative industry is the constant innovation, where there’s always something new to explore and learn, keeping the creative process dynamic and evolving.

Collaboration is another key aspect I love, as it’s a field that brings together people with a wide variety of skills, from artists to technologists, all working toward a common vision.

Finally, the industry’s ability to harness technology to create immersive, interactive storytelling experiences is particularly rewarding, as it opens up new dimensions for how stories can be told and experienced.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the creative industry?

China is a surreal place where cutting-edge technology and traditional manual labor coexist in a fascinating juxtaposition. It’s not only a center for rapid technological advancement but also one of the largest production hubs in the world, where high-tech developments meet craftsmanship on a massive scale.

This unique blend creates a landscape where creativity is fueled by both innovation and a deep-rooted cultural history. The contrast between the ancient and the modern, between labor and technology, offers fertile ground for creative exploration and makes China a truly unique environment for the creative ideas.

16Where do you see the evolution of creative industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I believe we’ll see an even deeper integration of technology with creativity, particularly in immersive experiences and AI-generated content. The boundary between creator and audience will blur as interactive and collaborative forms of storytelling become more prevalent.
17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Creative Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?
Stay curious and keep experimenting. Don’t be afraid to push the boundaries of the tools you use, and always think about how your work connects with people emotionally. It’s not just about the technical execution, but about creating meaningful experiences.
18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the creative industry?
Online learning platforms, open-source communities, and mentorship programs are invaluable. Participating in creative hackathons or collaborative projects can also provide hands-on experience and exposure to new tools and approaches.
19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
I love diving and I love craftwork. But I once tried to make my own carbon-fiber fins for diving but they broke during my third dive.
20Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Liam Young has been a significant inspiration in my creative journey. As a visionary designer, filmmaker, futurist, and my instructor, his work blends speculative narratives with futuristic design, reshaping how we imagine cities and technologies of tomorrow. He's work convinced me that architects are capable of design something so much more impactful.
21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
I would not say I'm 100% successful yet, but I try to keep my perseverance and curiosity. Have fun and stay curious.
22Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?
I’d just like to say thank you for this recognition! It’s an honor to be part of such an innovative and forward-thinking community of creatives.
