Hillside Retreat

Designed by Webster Architecture & Interiors, Pippins is a striking example of contemporary architecture that reflects a deep respect for its surroundings while pursuing a philosophy of elegant simplicity. Situated on a windswept hillside, this residence is thoughtfully integrated into its natural environment, showcasing an architectural presence that is both bold and unobtrusive.

The design process began with the need to address the challenges posed by the prevailing winds that flow from the ocean up the hill. Balancing the desire for transparency to maximize the breathtaking panoramic views with the need for shelter from these winds was crucial. The layout of Pippins ensures unobstructed vistas while providing the necessary protection, allowing the beauty of the landscape to be experienced fully from within the home.

Flexibility in the home's program was another vital consideration. The layout accommodates various entertaining styles while maintaining distinct internal zones that allow for functional separation. This design ensures that different activities can coexist harmoniously without sacrificing comfort or usability.

The initial concept presented an innovative single-story, X-shaped structure. This configuration creates outdoor pockets that are naturally sheltered by the main building form, allowing residents to enjoy the outdoors while remaining protected from the elements. Each space within the home fosters a continuous connection to the exterior, enhancing the experience of living in harmony with nature.

Central to the aesthetic of Pippins is the concept of a "flying roof." Composed of two overlapping solid concrete roofs, this feature extends 2.5 meters along the perimeter and stretches to 3.5 meters at the corners. The tapered soffit, culminating in a 100mm bullnose, imparts a sense of lightness to the structure, contrasting beautifully with the solid form of the home.

Throughout the design and construction phases, a commitment to simplicity remained paramount. Collaboration with builders, tradesmen, and consultants ensured that the architectural vision was realized without compromise. The result is a residence that not only fulfills the client’s needs but also enriches their quality of life.

Pippins exemplifies how thoughtful architectural design can enhance the living experience while remaining sensitive to its environment. The harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetics establishes this home as a serene retreat, where nature and architecture coexist beautifully.
