Debby Chen

Debby Chen is a Designer whose speciality lies in the creative design of products and their development. She's the founder of De Pure company, which focuses on the development and promotion of intimate care products. Her passion for creative expression and her previous professional experiences equipped her with problem-solving skills in the designing of female care products.

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
I don’t come from a traditional design background, but I’ve always had a passion for creative expression. My previous professional experiences have equipped me with strong problem-solving skills and keen observational abilities, which play a crucial role in design. I frequently engage in interdisciplinary projects, learning how to integrate various ideas and needs into a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design solution. These experiences have fueled my passion for exploring design, ultimately leading me into the world of design.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?
I have a strong interest in painting and art. Design provides me with the opportunity to transform creativity into tangible products. I chose to become a designer because this profession is both challenging and fulfilling, satisfying my passion for creation and problem-solving.
3Tell us more about your agency/company, job profile, and what you do.
I am the founder of De Pure company, where we focus on the development and promotion of intimate care products. Our business scope includes product concept design, formula development, packaging design, and market promotion. We are committed to providing high-quality intimate care solutions, with innovation and professionalism at our core, combining advanced technology with natural ingredients to meet consumer needs. In this field, we not only focus on product efficacy but also on user experience and overall design.
4What does “design” mean to you?
Design is a way to solve problems and express creativity. It combines aesthetics and functionality to make our daily lives better and more convenient.
5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
I prefer minimalist design because it emphasises removing unnecessary decorations, allowing the product’s functionality and aesthetics to blend perfectly. It also conveys a sense of quietness and simplicity.
6To you, what makes a “good” design?
Good design should be intuitive, functional, and capable of evoking emotional resonance. It must not only address user needs but also have enduring appeal.
7How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?
The inspiration for this design came from observing modern lifestyles. I aimed to create a product that meets human needs while possessing a stylish aesthetic.
8What was your main source of inspiration for this design?
My inspiration comes from observing daily life, especially user pain points and needs. I also draw inspiration from the forms found in nature and incorporate them into my designs.
9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Yes, my country and culture have a profound impact on my design, particularly in material choices and attention to detail. Our traditional craftsmanship and aesthetic principles have always been an important reference in my work.
10Congratulations! As the winner of the French Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
Thank you! This award is a recognition of our design philosophy and creativity. For my team, it is a great encouragement, reinforcing our commitment to excellence and leaving a significant mark in the global market.
11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the French Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
Our award-winning project is a product that combines modern technology with human-centered design. It is powerful yet elegantly simple. We chose this project because it represents our core values of innovation and practicality.
12What were the main challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was balancing functionality and aesthetics. We overcame this through continuous testing and adjustments, along with in-depth communication with users, ultimately creating a product that is both practical and beautiful.
13How do you think winning this award will impact your future as a designer?
This award will bring more international opportunities and collaborations to my design career. It boosts my confidence to explore new areas and motivates me to continually push my boundaries.
14What are your top three (3) favorite things about the design industry?
I enjoy the creative freedom in the design process, the sense of accomplishment when collaborating with clients, and the satisfaction of seeing the final product successfully launched into the market.
15What sets your design apart from others in the same category?
Our design stands out due to its meticulous attention to detail and deep understanding of user needs. We focus not only on appearance but also on the product’s user experience, which sets our design apart.
16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the design industry will increasingly focus on sustainability and technological applications. With advancements in artificial intelligence and virtual reality, design will become more intelligent and personalised.
17What advice do you have for aspiring designers who want to create award-winning designs?
My advice is to always stay curious, be willing to challenge traditional design thinking, and continuously focus on user needs. Combine creativity with practicality to achieve success.
18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
I recommend participating in design forums and workshops, regularly reading design-related books and magazines, and learning new technologies and tools, as these are essential for skill enhancement.
19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
I have always placed great importance on giving back to society and have a strong commitment to this cause. Whether through charitable activities or supporting community projects, I aim to make a tangible contribution to society. This passion and drive are what motivate me to maintain a positive attitude in both work and life.
20Who has inspired you in your life and why?
Nature has always been a source of inspiration for me. Its forms and structures provide new insights into order and randomness in design.
21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
The key to my success is relentless learning and a deep passion for design. I firmly believe that with focus and enthusiasm, success will follow.
22Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?
I want to thank my team and family. Without their support, I would not have reached where I am today.
