Freedom Amidst Chaos
Marlena Wels, a self-portrait artist, masterfully capturing the process of self-discovery through five evocative images in her captivative photographic series: A Journey to the Self. Each photograph portrays a distinct stage in the journey, symbolising the emotional and transformative aspects of finding one's true identity. This series was created as part of an exhibition-themed "attitude," drawing inspiration from the historical and emotional narratives of expressive and artistic impressions.
The first image presents a poignant scene of a woman who has broken down, surrounded by shattered glasses on the ground. The broken masks around her symbolise the lost and hidden self, suggesting the fragility and fragmentation of her identity. This initial stage sets the tone for the series, depicting the raw and vulnerable beginning of the journey. The use of shattered glass and broken masks highlights the disintegration of the persona she once presented to the world, revealing the underlying turmoil and confusion.
Continuing "A Journey to the Self", the woman is seen on the floor among numerous mirrors. She holds one mirror up, signifying that she has found herself amidst the chaos.
