1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.
Hello, I’m April Maung, a digital designer and artist with a passion for creating engaging and impactful visuals. I’m a Performance Manager in the Performance Marketing team at Digital Minds Group, an independent digital marketing agency based in North Sydney.
With a background in social media and digital marketing, I’ve spent the past decade honing my skills in both creative and strategic aspects of digital media. My journey has been driven by a love for art and technology, blending these fields to craft compelling digital experiences.
2What made you become/why did you choose to become a digital designer/artist?
I chose to become a digital designer because it allows me to combine my passion for creativity with my interest in digital marketing. From a young age, I was fascinated by the way art could evoke emotions and tell stories. As I grew older, I realized that digital design offered a powerful medium to reach and engage a global audience. The ability to bring ideas to life and see the tangible impact of my work in real-time was incredibly motivating and pushed me to pursue this path.
3Tell us more about your business / company, job profile, and what you do.
Digital Minds Group is an independent digital marketing agency located in North Sydney. As a Performance Marketing Manager, I oversee a range of digital campaigns aimed at driving growth and engagement for our clients.
My role involves strategizing and executing marketing initiatives, analysing data to optimize performance, and collaborating with a talented team of designers, developers, and marketers to deliver exceptional results. We pride ourselves on our innovative approach and commitment to excellence, helping brands connect with their audiences in meaningful ways.
4What’s your favorite kind of digital design and why?
My favorite kind of digital design is striking yet simple. I love designs that are bold and eye-catching, yet maintain a sense of clarity and purpose. The use of vibrant colours and playful elements can make a design stand out while conveying the message effectively. This balance between aesthetics and functionality is what makes a design truly impactful.
5To you, what makes a “good” design?
A good design is one that immediately grabs attention and communicates its message clearly and effectively. It should have a unique element that makes it stand out, encouraging viewers to stop scrolling and take notice. Good design is not just about visual appeal; it’s about creating a connection and delivering a message in a way that resonates with the audience.
6Describe your design style and its main characteristics.
My design style is on-brand and playful. I believe in maintaining brand consistency while injecting a sense of fun and creativity into the work. This approach helps to engage audiences and create a memorable experience. Key characteristics of my style include vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and a touch of playfulness that makes the design feel approachable and engaging.
7Tell us about your design process.
My design process begins with understanding the client’s goals and the message they want to convey. I start with research and brainstorming sessions to gather inspiration and generate ideas. Sketching out concepts and creating initial drafts allows me to explore different directions.
Once a concept is approved, I move on to detailed design work, focusing on color schemes, typography, and visual elements. Throughout the process, I collaborate closely with the client and my team, incorporating feedback and refining the design until it meets the desired outcome.
8Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, including social media, office collaborations, and being around creative people. I also love gathering inspiration from art galleries, graphic design artists on social media and nature. Staying curious and open to different perspectives helps me continually evolve and find new ways to approach design challenges.
9What current trends in digital design (or really anything digital related) are you most excited about?
I love to see how artists are using AI to enhance or inspire their artworks, and how accessible art-creating AI is becoming to the public. AI offers incredible opportunities for personalization, efficiency, and creativity in design. It allows us to create more dynamic and interactive experiences, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in digital media.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2024 Vega Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
We entered our Social Media campaign for an Australian gumboot brand. This project was particularly special because it involved introducing the brand to international markets through a comprehensive digital strategy. Our campaign highlighted the brand’s unique blend of fashion, functionality, and sustainability, using founder-based storytelling, viral content, and user-generated testimonials.
We chose this project because it showcased our ability to create engaging, culturally resonant content that drove significant growth and brand awareness. The success of this campaign, with a 560% year-on-year increase in international markets, exemplifies the power of strategic digital marketing and creativity.
12What was the biggest challenge with this project?
The biggest challenge was navigating the complexities of international market dynamics and cultural diversity.
