Hello, I'm Xinyue Geng, an award-winning architectural designer and artist with experience in mainland China, Taiwan, the UK, and the US. Currently, I work at Kohn Pedersen Fox in New York City, focusing on large-scale international projects.
My design philosophy is about creating dynamic spaces that foster human connections and evoke emotional experiences. By integrating emerging technologies and prioritising sustainability, I strive to redefine architectural environments and enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities.
Growing up in diverse cultural environments, I witnessed firsthand how the built environment influenced people's interactions and perceptions. This sparked my curiosity to explore the intersection of creativity, innovation, and human connection through design.
My decision to become a designer and artist was driven by a desire to contribute positively to the world. I believe that through thoughtful and purposeful design, we can create spaces that inspire, uplift, foster meaningful connections, and enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities alike.
The main source of inspiration for this design was the stark beauty and rugged terrain of the volcanic landscape surrounding Reynisfjara Beach. The design seeks to reflect the resilience and essence of the local community, drawing from the natural environment to create a harmonious blend of sturdy exterior and warm interior spaces.
Additionally, the mysterious and enchanting qualities of the obsidian sands at Reynisfjara Beach influenced the creation of a bespoke, immersive experience for travelers, ensuring a connection with nature and the local culture while adhering to sustainable design principles.
The winning project entered into the 2024 London Design Awards is a collection of minimalist living spaces nestled adjacent to Reynisfjara Beach. Inspired by the stark beauty of the surrounding black volcanic landscape, each space serves as a sanctuary for travelers seeking refuge amidst the rugged terrain. The design features a sturdy exterior shell juxtaposed with an inviting, warm interior core, reflecting the resilient essence of the local community.
Drawing inspiration from Reynisfjara Beach's obsidian sands and aura of mystery, the project seamlessly merges with its natural surroundings to offer a bespoke, immersive experience for hikers, weaving tales of endurance and comfort in a captivating environment. I entered this project into the 2024 London Design Awards because it beautifully encapsulates my design ethos.
Human-Centered Approach: My designs prioritise the emotional and experiential aspects of architecture. I focus on how spaces make people feel and how they interact with their surroundings, aiming to create environments that are not only functional but also deeply resonant on a personal level.
Cross-Cultural Sensitivity: With a diverse background, my work integrates a rich blend of cultural influences. This cross-cultural perspective allows me to create designs that are inclusive, globally relevant, and enriched by a variety of architectural traditions and innovations.
Integration of Emerging Technologies: I am committed to exploring and utilising the latest technologies in my design process. By integrating advanced digital tools and sustainable technologies, my designs are not only cutting-edge but also environmentally responsible and forward-thinking.
