On the South Coast of Iceland, Reynisfjara is a world-famous black-sand beach that is accompanied by nearby Reynisdrangar sea stacks which makes it a truly unique place to visit. Popularly, it is the filming location for tv-series Game of Thrones as well as movies such as Star Wars.
The Obsidian's Low-Rise Interior
Nestled adjacent to Reynisfjara Beach of Iceland, this collection of minimalistic living spaces stands as a sanctuary for travelers, drawing inspiration from the stark beauty of the surrounding black volcanic landscape.
Designed with a sturdy exterior shell and a warm, inviting interior, each space embodies the resilient spirit of the local community, telling stories of endurance and comfort amidst the rugged terrain.
The material choices and spatial configurations are thoughtfully curated to represent the surrounding environment and landscape. This creates a harmonious blend with nature while adhering to the sustainable design principles.
Comprising multiple irregularly shaped mini stations artfully scattered across the volcanic rock formations, it provides temporary refuge and relaxation amenities. This includes a soothing hot spring sauna built in these obsidian buildings.
Through its commitment to a sustainable principle, the project not only preserves the visual integrity of the local landscape but also actively contributes to the community's well-being.
The Obsidian embodies the synergy of architectural ingenuity and environmental stewardship that made it a winner of the London Design Awards.
