Interview With The 2023 New York Photography Awards Winner – Anna Foix

1Can you introduce yourself and talk about how you got into photography?

My name is Anna Foix and I'm from Lleida, Spain. I am a computer engineer and devote myself to programming, photography, nature, and spirituality are my passions. I am currently engaged in professional photography.

I have always loved photography, but it was in 2017 that I began to become passionate about it. At first, I took photos of myself that I already liked, but I didn't know the technique well. I took them manually and kept trying until I found the result I wanted.

In April 2017, I went to a photography workshop. That was when I was motivated to learn everything I could about photography, so I could get the image I wanted without having to do many tests but knowing the camera settings well. Since then, I have trained from the beginning, through advanced and master's degrees, also taking specific courses. Several reports were published in the local press. I have won local and international photography competitions and held several exhibitions.

2Where did you study photography?

I studied photography in Catalonia with Spanish photographers.

I started with various landscapes in Spain, then studied beginner and advanced digital photography, ending with a master's degree in professional photography in 2017. She also took courses with Spanish photographers and workshops.

3Do you remember your first shot? What was it?
I bought my first camera, a Nikon Reflex when my eldest son was born in 2007 and I took my first photo of him.
4What equipment do you use?
Six years ago, I switched to Mirrow less and started working with Sony Alpha 7. Because I'm passionate about birds, I work a lot with the Sony 200-600 telephoto lens. For macro, I use the Sony 50mm macro. For trips like India, I use the Sony 18-200mm zoom.
5What do you hope to achieve?

I would like to be able to collaborate with the awards I receive with my photographs for those who need them. For example, with this photo that won silver at the NY Photo Awards, I would like to win a prize with which I can collaborate with the Vicente Ferrer Association and help children like the one I show in my photo.

6What compliment inspired/touched you the most?

When they thank me for being able to see things they would never have noticed before, and when they tell me they would spend hours looking at one of my photos. Being able to show my particular vision inspires me a lot.

7What inspires your unique storytelling?
On the one hand, the wonder of nature is so perfect and precious, even if it is a tiny flower that grows on the side of a road. On trips like the one to India, it is to be able to capture what I feel when I change to a culture and country so different from mine and to be able to share the inner growth that I do through my photographs. He also enjoys helping other photographers connect with nature.
8What THREE (3) words describe your photography style?
Connection Awareness Nature
9Congratulations! As the winner of the New York Photography Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?

Thank you so much! For me, this distinction is a great honor and contribution to the launch of my professional career.

10Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 New York Photography Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

This work is part of a collection of photographs taken in India. Where we can observe the economic poverty that exists in this country, where you can find people and children sleeping in any corner, like this child sleeping in the middle of traffic on a highway.

I chose to participate in this project to be able to help children who are in a situation like the one in the photo with the money I could earn, and also to boost my career at a professional level.

11How has winning an award developed your career?
Each award you win gives you a boost and validation of your work and is a great motivation to keep sharing the photos that I love so much when I take them.
12Name 1-3 photographers who have inspired you.
Some of my teachers like Eduardo Blanco Mendizabal and Gus Geijo
13What was the best piece of advice you were given starting out, by a mentor or your role model?
That light is the most important thing and always takes care of the details.
14What advice would you give someone who would like to become a photographer today?

Before you start taking photos, connect with yourself and your surroundings, and from that state begin to enjoy photography showing your personality, not wanting to look like someone else.

15What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Be myself from my essence. Enjoy the present and the wonders that nature offers us.

16How do you stay in that space of being receptive to new information and knowledge?
I am always open to receiving new knowledge and learning from those who have already followed a previous path and can share their experiences.
17Anything else you would like to add to the interview?
Thank you to the organizers and judges of this photography contest for choosing my photograph as the winner.
