Interview With The 2023 London Design Awards Winner – Artem Kropovinsky

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I am Artem Kropovinsky, the founder of Arsight, located in the heart of New York City. My journey over the past ten years has been a vibrant tapestry of creating exquisite residential and commercial spaces worldwide. Our studio's signature is visible in various high-profile projects, from luxury hotels to exclusive residences.

Our design excellence is often spotlighted in top publications such as The New York Times and Interior Design Magazine, and we pride ourselves on our success in numerous international design contests.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?
Design is the essence of my being, a legacy passed down from my parents who were both established in the interior design sphere. Their zeal kindled a flame in me, not just to join but to innovate in this field. My journey in design is a deeply personal narrative, interwoven with my love for art and architecture.
3Tell us more about your agency/company, job profile, and what you do.
Arsight transcends the traditional scope of an interior design firm. We offer all-encompassing services, handling everything from concept creation to project execution. Our approach is holistic – managing design, construction, installation, and styling. This comprehensive strategy ensures a smooth journey for our clients and a consistent high standard of work.
4What does “design” mean to you?
For me, design is a harmonious blend of form, functionality, and emotional resonance. It's about shaping narratives that reflect the dwellers' character while being in sync with their surroundings. Design goes beyond aesthetics; it's about crafting experiences.
5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?
My design philosophy gravitates towards functional, personal, and timeless creations. I believe in crafting interiors that mirror the client's lifestyle or embody a brand's essence. As trends ebb and flow, designs that balance beauty with practicality endure.
6To you, what makes a “good” design?
A good design is an elegant integration of form and function. It should resonate emotionally, offering comfort and a sense of belonging, while serving its purpose gracefully and efficiently.
7How did you come up with the idea for your award-winning design?
My design ethos celebrates the imperfect and the artisanal. I favor natural materials and tactile surfaces, creating authentic, welcoming spaces. My style is a fusion of classic and modern, an interplay of the raw and the refined, crafting spaces that tell bold, functional stories.
8What was your main source of inspiration for this design?
My approach to design is deeply collaborative. It begins with understanding the client's vision, then evolves through mood boards, sketches, and 3D models. Regular client feedback and site visits ensure the design develops in harmony with their desires, resulting in a space that's both innovative and deeply personal.
9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?
Indeed! My European heritage informs my design ethos, emphasising craftsmanship and historical value. This sensibility, combined with the American penchant for innovation, allows me to create spaces that are both timeless and cutting-edge.
10Congratulations! As the winner of the London Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?
Securing the London Design Awards is a celebration of our team's passion and excellence in design. It underscores our global recognition and fuels our drive to continue breaking new grounds in the design world.
11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2023 London Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?
Our Chelsea, NYC project was a standout for the London Design Awards. We transformed an apartment into a space that celebrated minimalism and blended classic elegance with Scandinavian design. This project was a perfect candidate for the award, showcasing our ability to harmonise contrasts and create a uniquely serene environment.
12What were the main challenges you faced during the design process, and how did you overcome them?
The greatest challenge in the Chelsea project was balancing the old with the new - preserving the apartment's original charm while infusing modern elements. The task was to maintain the narrative of the space while crafting an entirely new experience.
13How do you think winning this award will impact your future as a designer?
Participating in this award program has elevated our global stature, opening avenues for collaboration and innovation. It's a recognition that fuels our creative spirit and affirms our commitment to design excellence.
14What are your top three (3) favourite things about our industry?
I cherish the dynamic nature of design, its transformative power, and the collaborative environment it fosters. These aspects ensure that our work is not only about aesthetics but about impacting lives and bringing diverse visions to fruition.
15What sets your design apart from others in the same category?
The United States, particularly New York, is a crucible of varied cultures and ideas, which is vividly reflected in its design landscape. This amalgamation of tradition and innovation offers a fertile ground for creative growth and exploration.
16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?
The next decade in design will see a stronger focus on sustainability, adaptability, and inclusivity. There will be an emphasis on eco-friendly materials and designs that accommodate an ever-evolving lifestyle, showcasing flexible and multi-functional spaces. Inclusivity will also play a significant role, with designs becoming more accessible and comfortable for a diverse range of users.
17What advice do you have for aspiring designers who want to create award-winning designs?
Embrace a relentless curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. The design landscape thrives on fresh ideas and constant innovation. Cultivate your unique voice and remain authentic; true originality is more impactful than following trends. Your individual perspective is your greatest asset.
18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?
Dive into a broad spectrum of design literature, from magazines like Domino to classic design texts. Participate in workshops, attend global design fairs, and engage in webinars. Networking is key - connect with peers, mentors, and leaders in the field. A diverse range of experiences is crucial for growth and inspiration.
19Tell us something you have never told anyone else.
In my early career, I often questioned my design choices, worried about aligning with the latest trends. I've learned that authenticity in design creates deeper, more meaningful connections than trend-following. True design excellence lies in creating spaces that reflect the unique identities of their inhabitants.
20Who has inspired you in your life and why?
My biggest inspiration comes from my parents, both of whom were talented interior designers. Their ability to transform spaces into captivating and functional environments instilled in me a profound appreciation for this art form. Their influence taught me the importance of balancing aesthetic appeal with practicality.
21What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?
My guiding principle is simple yet profound: design with empathy and authenticity. Every space has its own story, and it's our privilege as designers to narrate it beautifully. Stay true to your creative vision, embrace evolution, and always prioritise the needs and aspirations of your clients.
