See how the Shannon Family of Wines does winemaking differently by combining sustainability and nature together with great wine!
There’s nothing like a good glass of wine to knock back to after a hard day’s work. Swirling the dark red liquid around your tongue and savoring the refined and complex flavors of the fine liquor. While a lot of thought is put into identifying the strengths and weaknesses of that glass of wine, the same can be said when it comes to the negative environmental impacts that vineyards all over the world are causing. Generating an unprecedented amount of greenhouse gasses and emissions all just to create a single bottle of wine.
Wanting to push against the conventional narrative of producing great wine, the California-based vineyard and winemaker Shannon Family of Wines is dedicating its company vision and mission to put the interests of the environment first and making great wine. And to show you that they really mean business, they presented a brand anthem that gives us a preview of their winemaking process and commitment in reducing emissions as part of Shannon Family of Wines’ Project OVIS. A environmental project with the sole purpose of conserving nature during the production of wine.
The commercial shot and masterfully created by the Affinity Creative Group begins in the golden hour in the Shannon Family of Wines vineyard with Clay Shannon, the proprietor of the vineyard overlooking the valley of terraces and grapes growing along them. The narrator begins by saying that just like all things, everything starts and ends with the land. With that philosophy in mind, the winery makes their mission of conserving nature and creating great wine known. Further reinforcing that the path and methods they have chosen is not easy, but they put the life of the planet we are living in at the very top of the priority list and not into a bottle of wine.
We get some shots of staff members at the vineyard transferring the grape juice to ferment in oak barrels for long periods of time, walking alongside terraces to inspect the growth of the fruit, and finally inspecting the end product of their hard labor. The narrator adds that they do not claim to know everything about making a spectacular bottle of wine, or knowing every single step and measures to incorporate into their current setup. But if it’s good enough to lessening the carbon footprint by just a little bit, then it’s good enough for them.
The brand anthem also shows other shots other aspects such as a staff member fishing in a lake and another one herding sheep, which further bolsters the company mission of taking great care to the environment and the wild Californian nature around them.
Project OVIS does a lot more than you think in order to shave off as much greenhouse gasses! They employ methods such as choosing grape varietals that require the least amounts of water to grow, reducing the weights of the wine bottles to save emissions and gas during transportation, using only organic farming materials they can source within their homestead, refusal to use chemicals, reusing organic waste for mulch and compost, and reserving over 60% of their property to be left untouched.
If you want to contribute to Project OVIS, stop by their website and order a bottle of great wine or stop by their tasting room or physical store for a sip and rest easy knowing that every thought and care has been taken for the environment to make that glass of wine!
