Deep within the shallow tropical ocean waters lies the sea slug. Also widely known by its official name as the Nudibranch, these unique nautical lifeforms are among some of the diverse saltwater species across the globe. With each species looking completely different from one another through ingesting a wide variety of foods that give them the adaptations to survive in the harsh oceans.
Above the deep blue waters, though, is another species of nudibranch and the only one of its kind, millions of times bigger than even the largest species of sea slug! And instead of being fleshy, it is made of steel, glass and concrete and resides in the sandy beaches of Nanji Island and next to the East China Sea. All made possible by the amazing innovators at SpActrum for the Pingyang (Nanji Island) Tourism Investment Co.
The entirety of the layout is shaped to resemble the general shape of many of the most common nudibranch body types, complete with the antennae and breathing organs that soon split and converge into roads and pathways when viewed with a bird’s eye view. The hotel gently lies on the sandy beaches with gentle and sloping curves thanks to the parametric design techniques used to simulate the entire architectural foundation and its effects on the sandy beach.
The main standout feature of Hotel Nudibranch should immediately catch your attention when you first feast your eyes on this already remarkable architectural feat, that being the two domes of glass and steel. Where the bottom portion of the hotel houses the majority of the R&R facilities such as stores, swimming pools and sports areas, the two main domes will house the majority of the hotel rooms where the guests will reside in. Overlooking the sandy beaches and have the East China Sea as their permanent view.
Of course, such an ambitious project like this did not ignore what sort of permanent damage it can cause to the island’s ecosystem! Careful ecological considerations have been taken and is the main intent of this project, starting with restoring the sandy bay back it its former glory and then fine-tuning a way to regulate temperatures of the sand to be cool through using the shade of the structure alone. Additionally, the twin glass domes are also ventilated to use as little air conditioning as possible and avoid generating access heat, and all biological waste will be disposed of safely without the need of incineration.
The project for Hotel Nudibranch is definitely the next trendsetter for creating a paradise where humans and nature can coexist together. Let’s hope other hotels can take inspiration from nature and do their part is conserving it!
