Interview with the 2022 NYX Marcom Awards Winner - Kang Seung-hyun

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your background.

I am Kang Seung-hyun, a designer with 16 years of experience working as a generalist designer in Korea such as UX/UX and graphic design.

2What led you to become a marketing communication professional?

After graduating from university, I started as a print advertising & character designer. As I happened to work as a freelancer online design, I think I've been doing that job.

3What is your role in the agency, and what traits should a marketing communications professional possess to be successful in their role?

My main position is as a senior designer at Ecobridge Company.

Characteristics for successful roles seem to be more persuasive only when they are recognized for their skills first.

Second, I think it's about building relationships with colleagues and clients.

4Tell us more about your agency / company.

I belong to two companies.

The first is the "EcoBridge Company" I mentioned earlier. I am a founding member of the company, and I am a specialized UX/UI agency, and I have a lot of good design colleagues. Over the past eight years, we have worked on more than 100 projects together.

The second one is "and design." "and design" is a small company that I just started with an acquaintance and worked as an agent for my freelance work. We are designing something related to the public interest.

5What is your own definition of marketing communications?

I want to define it as visualizing and participating in unspecified text. Because I think visual is the most important thing in my job.

6Describe your marketing communications style and its main characteristics.

It is characterized by its wide design area. From UI design to font, logo, 3D, and animation, I have experienced and utilized it in various ways.

7Tell us more about your ideation process.

It's a list of keywords and research.

The keyword list is getting ideas by listing related keywords like spreading branches. Research is based on desktop research. Additionally, I collect and use data from certain scenes or colors while traveling.

8Congratulations! As the winner of the NYX Marcom Awards, what does it mean for you and your team to receive this distinction?

I'm very happy to receive the Gold Winner award. Winning the award gives me energy and strength as a designer. Especially at such a wonderful trophy award.

9 How has winning an international award help to promote your agency and works?

Since the award is not a material product design for sale, it is not as helpful as the certification mark.

However, I think the potential value will increase and I believe this will be a good history of the company or individual's career.

10 What are the challenges of your winning entry(ies)?

Need a change of public transportation in the corona to unspecified number of people in contact solutions and to improve the inconvenience of public transport.

11How has the country, you are based in, helped during your ideation process?

I thought of a service for ordinary people, not for special people.

Seoul, South Korea, has a high population density and many people use public transportation. These environmental factors helped us get the idea started.

12What are the current trends in the marketing communications industry that you are most excited about?

I don't know if this is the right answer, but I'm interested in the development of hologram technology and display.

13What resources would you recommend to someone who is searching to improve their marketing communications ideas and concepts?

Looking for any inconvenience that in the execution. And now a lot of information in the world is overflowing.I think we should find the necessary information from YouTube, and sns and Google.

14Where do you see the evolution of the marketing industry in the next 5-10 years?

The development of the display is likely to accelerate. There have been only changes in size now, but I think there will be changes in shape (curvature, outer shape) in the future.

I think even holograms like Iron Man movies can be developed.

15Who inspired you in your life, and why?

There are two people.

First, I am teacher Choi Chang-soo, who has grown me as a designer since high school. As a designer, I think you have captured the basic qualities and the attitude of trying hard.

The second one is Steve Jobs, although I haven't even met him. He is such a great person and sometimes makes me think about life again by watching PT videos.

16What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

I don't think it was successful. However, we are trying to succeed and investing our time.

17Do you have anything else you would like to add for the interview?

Thank you.
