Interview with the 2021 MUSE Design Awards Winner - Martynas Vezbickas

1Please give us a brief bio of yourself and your design background.

I am a person who was always impressed by visual arts and crafts (hence the title of my business – Craft Mark Studio). More than 12 years ago, I began my journey as a professional graphic designer, which has led me to where I am today – working with international clients on large-scale packaging and branding projects.

2What made you become/why did you choose to become a designer/artist?

Becoming a designer was a natural flow of events for me – I was always drawn into arts from my early days. No wonder that later in life, I became interested in the graphic designer’s profession and got inspired by the vast potential it presented.

3Tell us more about your business/company, job profile, and what you do.

I own a graphic design business called Craft Mark Studio, together with my wife. My primary role is a creative artist and graphic designer, and my wife is a copywriter. I work on branding and packaging design projects for companies worldwide – US, UK, Canada and Europe.

4What does “design” mean to you?

I view design and art as an opportunity to offer my knowledge, experience and creative process to help individuals and businesses succeed. When creating a unique design concept, I become a part of the client’s creative team and dive into the product development process to achieve the desired outcome. My creative cooperation with a client results in beautiful visual aesthetics, allowing the business to get noticed and succeed in the ever-changing market, enriching the customer experience along the way.

5What’s your favorite kind of design and why?

I mostly enjoy developing branding and packaging projects. Due to their more extensive scope, these projects allow me to dive deeper into the creative state. I love using my skills to help new companies build their brand, develop new successful products and grow.

6To you, what makes a “good” design?

A good design to me is the one that results in customer appreciation, encourages brand awareness and product usage. Another vital feature of a good design is the ability to stand the test of time without feeling outdated soon.

7Describe your design style and its main characteristics.

I am a modern & minimalistic style admirer. Depending on the occasion and the client’s goals and vision, I always lean into these two aspects when working on a new project. I enjoy incorporating colors and bold solutions that make the product or brand stand out.

8Tell us about your design process.

My design process always starts with a thorough research phase. It consists of gathering relevant design examples from the local and international market and evaluating potential opportunities. Then, the research of the brand and its target audience begins. I partner with my client to align our ideas, identify the brand’s story, define the strategic vision, plan actionable steps and dive into the creative flow. Following the exciting path of discovery, strategy and research, I develop packaging design that inspires, attracts and converts.

9Do you think your country and its cultural heritage has an impact on your design process?

To some degree, cultural heritage plays a role in forming one’s design style; however, I continuously follow international design trends and expand my knowledge and understanding in this field based on the bigger picture.

10Congratulations! As the winner of the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, what does it mean to you and your company and team to receive this award distinction?

Thank you! I truly appreciate this award and the ability to be among so many talented winners. This accomplishment acts as a stimulus to keep going forward in my path and strive to continue reaching new heights.

11Can you explain a bit about the winning work you entered into the 2021 MUSE Design Awards, and why you chose to enter this project?

This award-winning BBQ seasoning line project consists of 8 design labels connected by a vivid colour scheme and engaging visual aesthetics. This product allows the users to have a fun barbecuing experience or have delicious meals at home. I’ve chosen to enter this project as it has been highly appreciated by the client and his customers, resulting in a long-term cooperation and substantial product sales.

12What was the biggest challenge with this project?

The main creative challenge was creating an engaging product perfect for different occasions: barbecue events and the consumer’s kitchen. BBQ is socially accepted as an outdoor event; however, cooking great food at home can be as fun and exciting with the right products in your hands.

13How has winning an Award developed your practice/career?

Winning this award has filled me with motivation to go forward and strive for even more accomplishments in my professional career. It is a great opportunity and honor to be selected among other industry professionals!

14What are your top three (3) favorite things about our industry?

If I have to select three, it would be continuous evolution, taking part in new physical product launch and learning from inspiring professionals in the field.

15What makes your country specifically, unique in the design industry?

Lithuanian design specialists are dedicated and professional members of the international design community – it’s a pleasure to represent a young yet evolved country in this field.

16Where do you see the evolution of design industry going over the next 5-10 years?

I believe the future of design is about quality collaborations and valuable partnerships. The growing importance of visually appealing design will lead to further industry evolution and growth.

17If you were a student entering this industry or an aspiring MUSE Design Awards submitter, what advice would you give them?

My advice to the younger designer generation would be the following: “Be brave to be different and learn from the best ones. Always strive for quality and perfect your skills day by day. It all comes to achieving great results if you dedicate enough time and effort to what you do. Have patience and never take your talent for granted.”

18What resources would you recommend to someone who wants to improve their skills in the design industry?

I would recommend studying the works of influential designers. Also, I take inspiration from the following design websites and communities: The Dieline, Packaging of the World, Behance.

19Who has inspired you in your life and why?

I don’t have any particular person in mind. However, in my younger days, I was highly inspired by the beauty of print design (flyers, catalogues) which gradually evolved into a passion for packaging.

20What is your key to success? Any parting words of wisdom?

Combine 10% of your talent with 90% dedication to do the daily work, and you will achieve great professional results.

21Do you have anything else you would like to add to the interview?

Thank you once again for the excellent opportunity to be featured and awarded! I genuinely appreciate it. And thanks to everyone who has read this interview – I hope you got inspired to make your dream projects come true. The best of luck to you!
